New officers:

Lance Akana
Alissa Kashiwada
Marvelene Kama
Gayle Hinazumi

These individuals represent departments and units from across the campus, and are proud to serve at such an exciting time.  Our organization comes from a long history dating back to as early as the 1980s, so it will be a real privilege to serve alongside these committed individuals to promote unity and a commitment to our shared tradition.  That starts with updating our Staff Council bylaws which have not been revised since 2000.  Everyone is encouraged to read the current bylaws and participate in discussions we will be having early in this term.

The first General Membership Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 11:00 am in Ohia 118.  You will have a chance to meet members from across the campus and also participate in fun activities (although we won’t give away any surprises yet).

We look forward to hearing your feedback and ideas at our new address – askstaff@hawaii.edu.

Shaun of KCC’s Security in Honolulu Star-Advertiser

On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, Shaun St. Vincent was featured in Christine Donnelly’s Kokua Line. Here’s the article:

Mahalo
“Mahalo to Sean (Shaun) of campus security at Kapiolani Community College. I was late for my passport appointment, and luckily Sean (Shaun) happened to drive by, so I waved him down and asked for directions. Instead of giving me directions, he drove me to the building and told me how to get to the office. Thank goodness for his kindness. Because of him, I was able to get to my appointment on time. — Grateful senior”  Shaun Article

If you get a chance to see Shaun and the other great men and women in campus security, please thank them for all they do to maintain a safe and welcoming campus.

SPOTLIGHT: eBook “Cooking Up A Rainbow” w/Daniel Leung & Brett Botbyl

KCC’s Culinary Program Coordinator Daniel Leung brought together many talents at the Culinary Department and the CELTT to create an interactive e-book, to demonstrate the benefit and power of interactive media for learning and training. Some of the special features include video clips (each produced at KCC), flip-book slides, and scrollable recipe windows. This e-book targets educators, health professionals, teachers, and parents who work with children or teens – to eat, cook and prepare healthy food. The DOE Office of Child Nutrition Programs funded the project and will be taking the lead to launch it through the DOE networks.

Daniel will share his vision and experience as the project leader and Brett will talk about his role as the editor, designer and developer of the e-book using Lucidpress as the platform.

Faculty Laulima Workshop: Lessons (New in Laulima 2.9.3)

Are your students confused about where to go and what to do in Laulima?  Can simpler design and navigation help your students?

Consider Lessons (also called Lesson Builder), which is a new tool in the current version of Laulima.  It is a content delivery tool much like Modules, but it allows linking/embedding of other Laulima tools all in one place.  Students can work through a sequence of tasks on one page (e.g. watch a video, take a quiz, participate in a discussion, work on an assignment) without having to hunt for each activity.  This tool could be a game changer in designing courses in Laulima.

WHEN:  Wednesday, 9/30/2015 OR Thursday, 10/1/2015, 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm

WHERE: Naio 203

TO REGISTER: Go to Ohana Training page, log in, and follow the instructions in “Sign up for a workshop.”

Copyright & Licensing in the Digital Age

Please join us this Friday as Sunny Pai (Digital Initiatives Librarian at KCC) and Billy Meinke (formerly with Creative Commons) discuss copyright and licensing in the digital age.

This workshop addresses the basics about copyright, fair use, and the growth of licensing frameworks (e.g. Creative Commons) that allow creators to openly share their research, learning materials, art, and more with others. We are excited to have as guest speaker Billy Meinke, https://billymeinke.wordpress.com/, who is currently at the College of Education at the DCDC Group.

WHEN:  Friday, 10/2/2015, 12pm to 1:30pm

WHERE: Naio 203

TO REGISTER: Go to Ohana Training page, log in, and follow the instructions in “Sign up for a workshop.”

Still Got Time!

It is Kapi`olani CC’s tradition to participate in the annual UH-AUW Softball Tournament. And that tournament is scheduled for Friday, October 9 in the Les Murakami Stadium at UH-Mānoa. Our team is called the Royals and we are regal in our blue/white uniforms. For real!

If you are not cool about softball, you can help the team in other ways, as well as help Aloha United Way. There is a “participation challenge” for all teams participating in the tournament. The team whose campus/unit has the highest percentage of contributors to AUW by noon on October 7 will be given a “bye” in the first round of play at the tournament. The team whose campus has the second highest percentage will receive a one-run advantage in one of the first two games that the team plays.

Does this make sense? Go ask Alfie Gonzales to interpret for you (x9576). He is the team coach.

Now stop jumping up and down because I am about to tell you how you can make your fantastic donation to help out the Royals. Log on to https://auw.unitedwaypledge.org. You will be asked to enter a User ID (your UH email address) and default AUW Password (auw2015).

More questions on how you can share you generosity? Got a name. Call Wilma Go at x9515 or email wgo@hawaii.edu, or visit Wilma in `Ilima 206. Wilma is Kapi`olani CC’s campaign coordinator for AUW.

Mahalo plenty!
