The Queen Kapi’olani International Travel Scholarship – CIEE Study Abroad 2020 (SUMMER)

There’s something on the horizon….and it’s STUDY ABROAD!

The College is advancing its efforts through a campaign to advance interest in outbound study abroad programs to our Hawaii Resident students to destinations worldwide.

The Queen Kapi’olani International Travel Scholarship
Through a generous endowment by Dr. Louise Pagotto, The Queen Kapi’olani International Travel Scholarship was founded in the Fall 2019 and has since gained additional momentum with charitable donations by other prominent supporters to the College. The scholarship was created in parallel with study abroad opportunities hosted by the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) programs and affords students the opportunity to live and study in destinations worldwide for the Summer 2020 at a fixed cost of $950 – airfare and housing included.

Flat Rate Study Abroad at $950 – How it works…
For the summer of 2020, we are looking to award 2-3 students the opportunity to live and study at one of the abroad destinations above for 4 weeks at a flat rate of $950. If selected, The Queen Kapi’olani International Travel Scholarship will cover most of the cost of the program, including airfare and housing, with a fixed cost to the student of $950 – if awarded. Imagine going to one of these places nearly all expenses covered except for just $950. We’ll it’s happening!

ELIGIBILITY
*Eligibility based on student information with KISC Admissions and Records at the time of application
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Kapi’olani CC Home campus student
• Minimum 6 credits enrolled at Kapi‘olani CC at the time of application
• Must be legal State of Hawai‘i resident

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
1. Scholarship Application (email HIC at hic@hawaii.edu)

Provide all the required information in pen. Please print clearly.

2. Academic Letter of Recommendation

Applicants are required to provide one academic letter of recommendation from an instructor at Kapi‘olani CC. This letter should be completed by an instructor from whom you are currently taking a class or have taken a class from in the past. The letter must be on an official letter head and include a signature from the instructor. Please have the instructor seal the letter of recommendation in an envelope and sign along the back fold.

3. Personal Statement

Application requires a 2-page essay detailing your interests in applying for the scholarship program. Please include details on how participating in this program will help you achieve your academic and/or career goals. The essay should be 12 pt. font double-spaced.

4. STAR Transcript

Print an unofficial STAR Transcript and include with other application materials.
Applicants must submit the completed application and all required documents
on or before 4:00pm on MONDAY – MARCH 9, 2020. Please hand deliver application materials to:

The Wo Learning Champions are coordinating a UHCC-wide campaign to spread the word about the amazing things happening across our campuses and WHY we choose to be here. The #WhyUHCC campaign will focus on personal stories from YOU. Everyone has a unique story or “Why” that drives them, and we want to hear YOURS! 

These stories will be shared on the WoLC blog and select stories will be highlighted on our new Instagram feed (WoLearningChampions on Instagram), so follow us there too! This campaign will be present at HISSI with a social media contest, so stay tuned for more info.

Workshop: 8 Essentials of Accessibility (Today!!!)

Accessibility has successfully garnered wide attention from our admins, faculty as well as staff and became the word of my year in 2019. This is to invite you to participate in learning “Eight Essentials of Accessibility,” a 90-min workshop intended to introduce some of the fundamental principles of accessibility and prepare you for making digital content accessible for all users. The workshop includes a 30-min lecture, demonstration, hands-on activities, and an interactive Q&A session. The essential steps, such as applying useful headings, making hyperlinks meaningful, adding alternative text to images, formatting tables for ease of use, adding captions to presentations will be further discussed.

The workshop will be held this afternoon (Jan 31, 2020) at Lama 116 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. If you’re interested, feel free to drop by or sign up in advance. Come and join me for making your learning journey of accessibility a fun and practical experience!
