Aloha Points the Way

Have you ever seen a brilliant double rainbow and wondered if people in another part of the world are as lucky as we are in Hawaiʻi? The answer of course, is yes.  But nowhere else can Hawaiʻi’s spirit of Aloha be the same anywhere else.  Aloha points the way for us, much as the North Star returned the Hōkūleʻa home to us. It’s the way.

We are in that annual period of raising funds for a very charitable cause. All proceeds raised will benefit Aloha United Way or one of its non-profit partners. Every penny will stay in Hawaiʻi to help the families of Hawaiʻi.

Please consider donating items for re-sale at our “Twice as Nice” tables. Angela Coloretti-McGough, this year’s AUW Chair at Kapiʻolani CC, calls this re-sale effort a re-sale boutique. Nice! We are looking for kitchen items, glass and ceramic  pieces, baskets, homemade items, arts and crafts items, bottles of wine, jewelry, leather items, scarves, serving dishes, Holiday-themed items, plants, board games, toys, desk items, and wall hangings.

Unfortunately, we do not accept clothing.

Please drop off your donated items at the Office of College Relations and Continuing Education in ʻIlima 203 until Friday, October 5. Sales for these items will be in the ʻŌhiʻa Cafeteria on Monday, October 8, from 11:00AM – 1:00PM.

Thank you!

SPOTLIGHT Online: Time Saver Tips for Online Teachers TODAY Fri 9/28

Teaching online is seriously time-consuming!

There’s all the prep, and all the communicating with students individually, and then there’s all the feedback on assignments, which somehow always seems to take longer when it’s electronic. What can we do to ensure that we still get to take showers every day, and sleep a decent number of hours every night, and generally live our lives? Come to this SPOTLIGHT sessions to learn some time-saving tips that just might help.

We’ll be hearing from Kawehi Sellers, who will show us how to set up timed release (you can do this for announcements and assignments and discussion forums) and will share some of her other time-saving techniques. We’ll also hear from Reid Sunahara, who will show us how to use video feedback to do more with less time. And Marisa Yamada will show us some of the fabulous templates she has developed for us, so we don’t have to design or redesign our classes from scratch.

Join us Friday 9/28/18 at 1:00 – 2:00 pm in Lama 118. You can sign up here, or you can just show up and sign in at the session.

Snacks will be provided.

SPOTLIGHT Online Teaching sessions highlight the interesting work of DE teachers around specific topics or areas. Save these dates for the SPOTLIGHTs scheduled for Fall 2018:

Friday 9/28/18, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Lama 118: Time Saver Tips for Online Teachers (colleagues share their tips for having a life while teaching online)

Friday 10/26/18, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Lama 118: ADA Accessibility

Friday 3/23/18, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Lama 118: See? Laulima’s Not So Bad (a show-and-tell of Laulima classes)
