OFIE Director Bob Franco featured in NERCHE Center for Engaged Democracy

The New England Resource Center for Higher Education Center for Engaged Democracy featured the work of OFIE Director Bob Franco as one of the selected grant recipients in 2014-15.  The grant entitled Advancing Current Critical Issues in Community Engagement Research was open to a national pool of applicants.  Dr. Franco’s research will prioritize student outcomes.  The full abstract is as follows:

The purpose of this study is to extend the scope of the 2012  “Core Competencies in Civic Engagement: A Working Paper in the Center for Engaged Democracy’s Policy Papers Series” to include the identification of the civic engagement competencies that community colleges are expecting students to demonstrate through the examination and categorization of institutional, programmatic or course-level learning outcomes. This study will utilize both survey methodology and participatory action research by community college faculty, professional staff, and administrators responsible for civic engagement or service-learning at the campus level.

CELTT web-team closed during Winter Break

Our CELTT web-team will be closed during the Winter Break. We will not be accepting Resolve tickets or phone calls during this period. We will resume normal operation on January 5th, 2015.

Here’s a couple of details that impact our faculty and staff when we return from the Break:

  1. Quill will be effectively defunct. Because UH ITS will be pulling the plug on the old login authentication system, we will effectively be unable to access any of the forms and minutes that had be collecting on Quill all these years.
  2. In anticipation of this, our team has been migrating those forms from Quill to our new Faculty website, “‘Ohana” which we plan to debut to the New Employees on the 7th. This will be a limited rollout, offering the bare essentials new employees need to get situated.
  3. We will begin a beta phase of “‘Ohana” with a limited audience of Faculty and Staff to begin training and review of the new site, test a workflow, and start reviewing content that really hadn’t been organized for quite some time on Quill. We anticipate challenges during the first half of the year, but expect things to sort itself over the coming months with everyone’s help.
  4. We will plan a gradual meeting with departments across campus as the pieces of ‘Ohana gradually works itself out, offering training and consulting help with the new system.

We have begun shifting all Quill document update requests to ‘Ohana.

Have a Happy Holiday Season,

— Your Web-Team

Healthy Living C4ward: Marathon Finishers

The Healthy Living C4ward would like to recognize our C4ward members who participated in the 2014 Honolulu Marathon on Sunday, December 14, 2014. The Honolulu Marathon is a 26.2 mile race that started in 1973 and the race route comes within proximity of our campus.

Congratulations to Evan Yoshimura, Lynn Hamada, Veronica Ogata, and Melvin Jadulang (Left to Right).winnersA unique fact of the Honolulu Marathon is that unlike most marathons around the world, the Honolulu Marathon does not have a time cut-off for runners on the course. Last year, the final finisher completed the 26.2 mile race from Ala Moana Boulevard to Kapiolani Park in 19 hours, 39 minutes, 34 seconds (45 minutes per mile pace!). This is a Marathon that ANYONE can do!

Photos from the KCC Scholarship Dinner

Every year, Kapi`olani Community College, with the support of the UH Foundation, hosts a dinner to thank our donors for supporting the College and especially for supporting our students. This year, close to $600,000 was awarded to over 300 students!

This year’s dinner was held on November 25th, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, which was perfect as students were able to meet the donors and convey their appreciation. Dave Evans, Chair of Hospitality Education, and Vice Chancellor Louise Pagotto hosted the program.

Please enjoy the photos from the event, which have been published to Facebook.
