Facilitated by Kynan Kawai, Fairmont Orchid – Hawaii

Kynan Kawai grew up in Hawaii. Attending public school till 2009, he was then accepted into Kamehameha, Kea’au. From a town fueled by agriculture and hospitality, Kynan explored both to see which provided opportunities of interest. Being actively involved in agriculture & ranching, he decided it was essential to understand business. However, in 2013, upon being accepted into Northern Arizona University for Business Management, he felt lost. Refocusing to Hotel & Restaurant Management was the perfect move. Working in Food & Beverage throughout college provided the skills needed to gain an Assistant Restaurant Manager Position at Fairmont Orchid in 2018. He expressed interest in focusing on colleague engagement & growth. In 2021, he was offered a Talent Acquisition Manager position where he embraces the Accor Employee Value Proposition, “Be Limitless.”

Back in the Day: 1946 Facts and Throwback

For those of you who like history, nostalgic moments, and #throwback Thursday activities, you are bound to enjoy the free Kaiāulu Webinar, Back in the Day: 1946 Facts and Throwback on Thursday, September 30, 2021, 5:30 -6:30 p.m. Spaces are going fast but thereʻs still time to register, simply go to the following link: http://go.hawaii.edu/FZJ

Kapi`olani Community College traces its beginning to the year 1946 as do its community partners including AHL – Architects of Hawai`i, Mauna Loa Chocolates, Mary Star of the Sea, and Kaimuki Business Professional Association (KBPA). What were these fledgling institutions and businesses faced with at that time when Hawai`i was undergoing a significant transformation after the end of WWII?

Special guests are: Bob Sigall, who is the author of five bestselling books, The Companies We Keep and columnist for the popular Review Mirror in the Honolulu Star Advertiser each Friday. Bob is Hawaii`s Business Historian. His books and columns tell amazing stories about well-known Hawai`i people, places, and companies. He taught marketing and management at Hawai`i Pacific University for 15 years.

Kiersten Faulkner, Executive Director of the Historic Hawai`i Foundation, is the chief executive and oversees all aspects of its preservation programs, strategic planning, business lines and operational matters. Prior to joining HHF in 2006, Faulkner was a Senior City Planner for the City and County of Denver. She holds a Master of Arts in Urban and Environment Policy from Tufts University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Keith Kashiwada is a speech professor at Kapi`olani Community College, where he has taught for thirty years. It is also said that he has been a contestant on the popular television game show, Jeopardy.

Don’t miss this informative, nostalgic, and fun experience. See you on the flip side!

“Kapi`olani Pride” t-shirt contest winner

Christopher Viernes

Amy Shiroma and Korey Nishimoto co-chair the “Engagement” committee under the College’s Student Success Pathways and together, they organize an annual “Kapiʽolani Pride” t-shirt design contest with much success.

Using the College’s 75th Anniversary theme, “Ā Mau Ke Kukui” (The light continues to burn or shine), design entries reflected creative images to celebrate this milestone year. Through a vetting process, one winner emerged from the 44 entries received.

Already with a degree in communication arts/graphic design from Honolulu Community College, Christopher Viernes is the winner of this year’s “Kapiʽolani Pride” t-shirt design contest. Christopher is transitioning into the healthcare field, with a point of interest in the Radiologic Technology Program.

Central to his design is a lightbulb. Christopher explains, “The ‘idea’ aspect of the lightbulb plays off the idea of ourselves, you know, we have an idea of what we sought out to be, what we want to accomplish and succeed in, which is represented by the silhouette of a person throwing two shaka’s in the air encompassing that KapCC can help us get to where we want to be. Hence, Kapiʽolani pride!”

Christopher was awarded a $1,500 scholarship and a merchandise gift pack from Kapiʽolani Community College Bookstore for his wining design.

Debralee Goto, Kapi`olani CC’s Bookstore Manager has been a strong supporter of this annual campaign. Visit the Bookstore soon to purchase a Kapiʽolani Pride t-shirt, while supplies last.

Congratulations, Christopher!
