Waikiki Aquarium ASL Tours

Kapiʻolani CC’s very own, Jan Fried celebrated the official launch of American Sign Language (ASL) tours at the Waikiki Aquarium as part of her project entitled Project WĀIʻA: Waikiki Aquarium Includes ASL. Through this program, the Waikiki Aquarium will be the FIRST and ONLY in the nation to offer ASL on-demand tours!

The American Sign Language/English Interpreter Education and the Waikiki Aquarium received SEED-IDEA funding from the University of Hawai’i to spearhead, “Project WĀIʻA: Waikiki Aquarium Includes ASL”, with the goal to translate into ASL selected ocean-related exhibits at the Aquarium. Phase one includes 4 videos. Through the use of smartphone, tablet or laptop, these on-demand videos will provide for deaf and hard of hearing community and guests the same information that the Aquarium’s on-demand audio tours do for guests. The second round of exhibits is currently being translated into ASL by our amazing team of deaf translators and should be available to the public in the fall.

Hawai‘i Foodbank Drive Results

Aloha KapCC ‘Ohana,

WE DID IT!!! Our campus has contributed 2,011 pounds of food and $1103.48. We have far exceeded our goal and we couldn’t have done it without all of you! Thank you for your generosity and your hard work in supporting our campus’ contribution to help support those in need.

As we mentioned earlier, Chancellor Pagotto would generously donate a Pizza Party to the department that collects the most food items by weight and the most monetary contributions.

We proudly present our winner for the most food by weight at 511 pounds, is Human Resources and Business Office. Our winner for contributing $270.00, is the Admin Staff & Support. We will send your departments a separate email with details about the pizza party. Click here if you would like to see our campus’ results.

Once again, thank you all for participating. Our campus has done an outstanding job this year and it has been a pleasure working with all of you. You have made this an unforgettable experience for us and we hope next year will be just as memorable.

Mahalo,
Mirriam Awong and Jamie Miyashiro
