Congratulations Sharon Sussman – 2018 Kunimoto CTE Award

We are proud to announce that Sharon Sussman has
been selected as the recipient of the Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Career and Technical Education at the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges.  Sharon is an art professor and coordinator of the New Media Arts program at Kapi‘olani Community College. She began her career in California first as a painter, then as a teacher, then jumped into the world of computers when she started her graduate studies in the CADRE program – Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education. This led her to a job at DreamWorks Feature Animation.

Sharon brought her skills in traditional art and digital art, and her passion for teaching, to Kapi‘olani Community College to design the New Media Arts Animation program. She conceived and developed the prestigious New Arts Lecture Series, bringing top-notch prominent artists and animators to the College to lecture and teach workshops. The impact of this lecture series cannot be overstated as it has exposed students and the general community to the artistic aspect of the entertainment industry.

Arts and Humanities Department Chair Sarah Bremser avers, “Ms. Sussman has provided steady leadership from the start. She is the voice of reason in times of chaos and is a role model for her students. She is constantly pursuing new opportunities for her students and encourages them to think beyond the box. For example, The New Media Arts program continues to explore the possibility of a new AA degree in NMA and in inter-disciplinary certificate for various initiatives that blend art and technology such as STEM and Creativity Academies. Ms. Sussman is accessible, motivated, hardworking, dedicated and empathic. She is passionate in all that she does and I cannot think of anyone more worthy of this award.”

Please join us at the Spring 2018 commencement ceremony on on May 11, 2018, 6:30 pm, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center as we recognize Sharon for this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations Jeff Neslen – 2018 Lecturer Excellence in Teaching Award

We are proud to announce that Jeff Neslen is this year’s
recipient of the Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Lecturers. Jeff  began teaching mathematics and statistics courses here at our College in Spring 2016. Prior to arriving in Hawai`i, Jeff taught at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, and most recently at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Jeff Neslen is a person of adventure, curiosity and purpose. He spends an inordinate amount of time tutoring and mentoring students and community users with mathematical quandaries in the Student Hub on campus. Students have commented on his sense of humor, which brings levity, they say, to problem solving. Jeff’s enthusiasm for his work at the College gives him great joy, and he feels he reinforces his teaching with the refreshing insights his students bring to him about their learning. Something Jeff never tires of saying to students is, “You dedicated yourself and worked hard. I am proud of you.”

When not teaching or tutoring, Jeff enjoys SCUBA diving, exercising, reading, and developing his skill with Taekwondo. He also enjoys painting various objects ranging from baseball bats to hub caps. Some of these items are on display in the Study Hub.

Please join us at the Spring 2018 commencement ceremony on May 11, 2018, 6:30 pm, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center as we recognize Jeff for this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations Beau Ewan – 2018 Frances Davis Award

We are proud to announce that Beau Ewan has been selected
as the recipient of the Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching here at Kapi‘olani Community College!  Beau has been with the College since 2014 and teaches English in the Languages, Literature and Linguistics Department.  He is described by his students as engaging, challenging and therefore empowering in his writing assignments. Being a prolific and published writer, Beau insists that his students be clear in their thinking by rising above complex information and ideas in order to depict and discern the nuances between thinking and writing.

Beau loves the outdoors. When not teaching, he makes time for surfing. Beau relocated to Hawai`i for the waves, but stayed for the people. He enjoys the diversity found in the islands, and he feels especially grateful for the support of his colleagues and the opportunities he has been given to apply his personal and pedagogical investment in writing towards helping students with their own self-discovery.

Please join us at the Spring 2018 commencement ceremony on on May 11, 2018, 6:30 pm, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center as we recognize Beau for this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations Jaclyn Lindo – 2018 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching

We are proud to announce that Jaclyn Lindo has been
selected as this year’s recipient of the Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching at Kapi‘olani Community College. Jackie has been with our College since 2014 and teaches Economics in the Social Sciences Department. Through the implementation of a flipped classroom, her courses uniquely synthesize economic theory, indigenous knowledge, ‘āina-and place-based learning, service learning, community engagement, undergraduate research, and a sustainability mindset. By using the community and its resources as her classroom arena, she inspires students to reach out to find a niche that is empowering and fulfilling. She teaches her students to be a catalyst in their own self-discovery.

Jaclyn has presented at the UH Sustainability in Higher Education Summit and the UH Grand Challenges Summer Institute. She leads the Sustainability-Focused course assessment team of the Kapi`olani Research Scholars Program, and she has received the 2018 UH President’s Green Award for faculty innovations in sustainability curriculum. She is also part of the student-led cross-disciplinary team that includes chemistry, culinary arts, and economics that received the 2018 Green Project Implementation Award. This project will generate biodiesel for use in sustainability-related projects on campus, to model energy cost savings, and to explore product development by turning waste by-products into resources.

When she is not teaching, Jackie serves as the faculty advisor to the Economics and Business Club. She enjoys deepening her understanding of Hawaiian culture, exploring the islands’ unique ecology, and working with ‘āina-based community organizations.

Please join us at the Spring 2018 commencement ceremony on May 11, 2018, 6:30 pm, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center as we recognize Jaclyn for this well-deserved honor!
