Kitchen Tour: Staff Council’s Tasty Visit to the Kapiolani CC Cafeteria

IMG_7453The Staff Council was treated to a 60-minute walking tour of the Ohia Cafeteria, hosted by Cafeteria Manager John Mizokawa and fellow representative Marvelene “Momi” Kama.  With hair bonnetts on, we were ready to embark on our tour of what lies behind the double-paned doors to where the ono bentos, butter mochi, and savory salads come from.
IMG_3340Just days before Thanksgiving, the kitchen was full of activity with people preparing for the second annual take-out Thanksgiving dinner being prepared for pick up tomorrow.  The team consisted of students working toward their required apprenticeship hoursunder the tutelage of Kapiolani Community College’s renowned chefs and seasoned staff who have called the cafeteria home for many years.  The sights and smells evoked so much curiosity and excitement.

Attendees learned about the mission at the Cafeteria, as well as our fellow staff members’ roles on this unique work environment.  Following the information session, the attendees observed various work stations where vegetables were being chopped, ingredients were mixed, and instruments of all shapes and sizes made a symphony of sounds.

The Staff Council had a chance to talk story with John Mizokawa to learn more about the Cafeteria’s mission and its impact on the education of students in the Culinary Program.  Additionally, we learned about the impact of the Cafeteria on providing students with employment opportunities through SECE as they gained professional skills such as punctuality, dressing according to the work requirements, and customer service.  We learned about the best sellers, including the mouth watering scones sold at the Saturday Farmer’s Market.

Kai Yama Applications Open

Kai Yama LogoKai Yama is a 1-year Program open to KCC Students and represents an educational, cultural, and intellectual exchange from the oceans of Hawai‘i (Kai) to the mountains of Japan (Yama). The Kai Yama project is a collaborative partnership between University of Hawaii, Kapi‘olani Community College, Oahu, HI and Kansai University, Takatsuki Campus in Osaka, Japan.

Over the year-long program, students from both countries will communicate collaboratively as they investigate both local and global environmental issues. During two week-long country exchanges, students will actively participate in the community issue through the lens of place-based and culture-based active learning.
The objective of this international student exchange is to engage future leaders by connecting ecology and environmental science to local community conservation issues. Collaborative online technologies will allow participants to build relationships, identify commonalities, and generate new solutions to ecological issues.

For more information see the attached flyer and/or contact Dr. Kuntz at wkuntz@hawaii.edu,  Kokio 104
Students must commit to taking one-credit class in Spring 2016 and again in Fall 2016, to participating fully in exchanges during UH Spring Break 2016 and 10-day visit to Japan in August 2016.
Applications are Due Friday Dec. 4

BOSA Toy and Food Drive

For the month of December, the Board of Student Activities (BOSA) will be having a Toy and Food Drive.  All proceeds collected will be donated to a local homeless shelter.  This year’s Toy and Food Drive will be a friendly competition between departments.

We will also have an  “Adopt a Club” option. Due to a lack of a designated facility for our clubs on campus and lack of student workers in some departments, this will be an option to assist one other in a possible win.

If your department is interested in participating, please email kccbosa@hawaii.edu by November 25, 2015 and we will provide further instructions.  In your email, please be sure to include:

  1. The name of your Department Chair
  2. Number of Faculty & Staff members
  3. Number of Student workers
  4. If “Adopting a Club” the club name
If your department is not participating, but you would like to drop off a donation, you can drop it off at the Office of Student Activities in Iliahi 126.
