Kelli Nakamura Publishes Article Chronicling Challenges of Nisei Swimmers

Congratulations to Dr. Kelli Nakamura (History) on her publication Soichi Sakamoto and the Three Year Swim Club “The World’s Greatest Swimming Coach”

Dr. Nakamura’s publication combines her passions in history and swimming to tell a tale untold; how early Nisei swimmers trained as young children on the plantations to become Olympic-class swimmers.  The article brings to light the financial disadvantages Soichi Sakamoto and other Nisei swimmers overcame in order to revolutionize training techniques which are still being used in competitive swimming today.

Dr. Nakamura’s article will appear in The Hawaiian Journal of History volume 48 (2014), which is available to University of Hawaii faculty, staff and students through their Oceania Digital Library.

Aside from her work as a renowned Historian, Dr. Nakamura is an avid swimmer and runner.  She is a strong supporter of UH Athletics and in particular the UH Swim Team.
