World Peace Smile at Diamond Head Crater

A big mahalo to everyone for being part of our World Peace Smile Event this past Friday, April 25th, with KCC’s Service and Sustainability Program, World Peace Plan, and Diamond Head Park. It was wonderful to see all the different community members and KCC community come together to promote World Peace during Earth Week this year. We had over 200 participants from KCC, Service and Sustainability Program, World Peace Plan, and community members gather together in Diamond Head Crater to form a Smiley Face so we could show our commitment to peace and sustainability. See our smiley face wink!

Student Success Campus Forum – Please Come & Help Us Prioritize our Recommendations

Aloha Faculty, Staff, Lecturers, and Administration,

As you may already know, the Student Success Report was unanimously approved by the Faculty Senate on April 7th and sent to the Chancellor shortly thereafter. The question that the Committee is currently facing is “Now what?” Well, the next logical step is to narrow down the recommendations and begin prioritizing them. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

PARTICIPATE IN OUR PRIORITIZATION ACTIVITY

To help us prioritize the recommendations, please come by the`Ohia lobby (by the bookstore) at any time on Wednesday, April 30th from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The Committee will have the recommendations posted for your review and kindly ask that you prioritize the recommendations that you would like to see implemented in Summer 2014-Spring 2015. Please see SSC – Actions to Prioritize. You will be given 15 stickers which you can place by the recommendations that you see as most important for students and for our campus.

Please invite your colleagues and your students to participate in this activity. Some instructors are offering students extra credit. This could also be a possibility for your students.

COME & SHARE YOUR IDEAS AT THE CAMPUS FORUM

At the upcoming Faculty Senate Campus Forum, which will be held on the same day, April 30th from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in `Ohia 118, the Committee will then discuss which recommendations received the highest number of votes and ask you to share your ideas on how to implement the top 10 recommendations. We need your input and want to hear your voices.  The forum is open to students, so please invite your students to join us.

TENTATIVE CAMPUS FORUM AGENDA

Brief Overview (2:30-2:45 p.m.)

Prioritization Results (2:45-2:55 p.m.)

Discussion of Recommendations & Implementation Ideas (2:55-4:25 p.m.)

Next Steps (4:25-4:30 p.m.)

Please take some time to review our final report at <http://facultysenate.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/committees/ssc/>.

Hope to see you there!  Mahalo, The Student Success Committee

Nagomi Teppan & Lounge Presents “A Night for the Culinary Arts” Fundraiser

Nagomi Japanese Teppan and Lounge will be hosting a benefit for the Culinary Arts Program at Kapiolani Community College on Thursday, May 15th at 6PM. All those in attendance will enjoy a Six Course Meal of Nagomi specialty dishes prepared by Owner and Head Chef Victor Jian. You will also get to meet aspiring Chefs and Hospitality students from KCC. Tickets are $125 and may be purchased through Kapiolani Community College. A portion of the proceeds will go straight to the Culinary Arts Program at KCC. Please help us promote this night for a good cause.

How this idea came to be:

Upon graduating the Culinary Arts Program at Kapiolani Community College in 2005, Chef Victor Jian has always envisioned opening his own restaurant in Hawaii and sharing his passion and culinary talent to the world. A strong educational foundation and years of training under Master Chefs in Japan has helped him realize his dream. Now, as the Owner and Head Chef of Nagomi Teppan and Lounge, Chef Victor wishes to give back to the program that has helped him become the Chef he is today.
