Save the Date: VIRTUAL Student Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF) 5/5 – 5/7

It’s that time of the semester! Please join us in celebrating our KapCC students and the work they have accomplished in the past few months. We are especially excited to feature students in the Sustainability Certificate Showcase for the first time!

Spring 2020 Student Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF)
Online presentations via Google Meet
Tuesday, May 5 to Thursday, May 7
Tues & Wed – 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Thurs – 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

We are embracing growth mindset by featuring research-in-progress presentations and experimenting with our first virtual conference! We’re hoping that SURF will be a casual space where faculty, staff, and students can share ideas and learn from each other.

Did you know that KapCC students:

  • Pulled 32,982 lbs of invasive algae in Maunalua bay over the past 10 years, contributing to a 25% increase in native algae species.
  • Investigated ways to reduce fuel consumption and increase the viability of alternative energy sources.
  • Monitored the Manu-o-ku bird on our campus and found that there may be predators nearby.
  • Found a potential way to reduce the likelihood of community college faculty and staff falling for phishing attempts.

Feel free to just pop in for a few minutes and check out a student’s presentation.  Students get really excited when people come and ask questions!

Instructions on how to attend and a program will be posted here shortly. Contact Li-Anne Delavega at ldelaveg@hawaii.edu for questions.

Show Your RESPECT

Aloha Kapi’olani CC Students, Faculty, Staff & Colleagues!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and a time our campus normally comes together to promote healthy relationships through participation in a local, statewide [respect] campaign.

The PAU (Prevention, Awareness, Understanding) Violence Coalition invites you to show solidarity for healthy, respectful relationships TODAY (4/29) by wearing a [respect] shirt or hat (that you’ve received from participating in a previous [respect] campaign) or wearing the color TEAL (the official SAAM color).

Even though we are physically distancing during this time, we can still show support for respect in our digital communities and spaces. Respect is particularly important, as pandemics and other global crises heighten the risk of sexual and other gender-based violence to occur.

Though we are faced with great mounting challenges and stress as we move through this time, let us reflect on the positive actions we can take to promote respect in our homes, relationships, communities, and ourselves.

Take good care and be well.

Aloha nui,

Your Kapi’olani CC PAU Violence Coalition

Congratulations to The NSLS Inductees!

On Monday, April 20, about 25 people came together to celebrate the induction of 12 Kapiʻolani CC student members into the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) during a virtual induction ceremony. As inducted members, they were also awarded their Foundations of Leadership Certificate.

And, a special thank you also goes out to Kapiʻo news and their coverage of the event.

About us: The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the nation’s largest leadership honor society and collegiate leadership development program. The NSLS differentiates itself from traditional honor societies in that students must complete a step-by-step leadership development program in order to become inducted.

The Kapiʻolani Community College Employment Prep Center (EPC) established a chapter with The NSLS for its students in August 2019. Su Lazo, Interim Coordinator for the EPC, and Angela Coloretti McGough, Interim Student Affairs Coordinator, serve as Chapter Co-Advisors.
