Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Queen Kapiʻolani

Julia Kapiʻolani NāpelakapuoKākaʻe was born on this day, December 31, 1834 in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Her father was Aliʻi Nui Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole of Hilo and her mother was Kinoiki Kekaulike of Kauaʻi, daughter of Kaumualiʻi, the last aliʻi nui of Kauaʻi. She reigned as Queen of the Hawaiian Islands from 1874 until 1891. Kapiʻolani Community College honors the legacy of Queen Kapiʻolani through these values: Kūpono, Kuleana, Mālama, Kūloaʻa and Kūlia.

If you submit slides after January 4th, they will not be included in the presentation at Convocation. However, after Convocation, all announcements will be posted several times on the News Bulletin.

UH FLOC.

Register for UH FLOC this week!

We’ve had several requests to get in on the FLOC fun, so we’ve re-opened the registration through 2020. If you’re interested in signing up for access to the site, please don’t miss this extended window!

What is UH FLOC?

The Faculty Learning (Online) Community – coming Spring 2021 – will be a space for faculty across the UH system to connect, communicate, and collaborate – to share questions, ideas, struggles and strategies about teaching and learning. It will be a place to find resources, tutorials, and current info about professional development opportunities. This will be a safe, brave space where we acknowledge we are all works in progress and where we all strive for continuous improvement through reflection and connection – a supportive space for all educators to learn from one another and move forward…together.

Critical Friends

One (optional) aspect of UH FLOC will be critical friend groups. The term critical friend may initially sound a bit… off-putting – who needs more criticism in their life?! But critical friends are crucial friends – they’re critical to our growth and development and they provide vital support, encouragement, feedback and helpful insights! We had requests for DE mentorship opportunities, but what we found was that everyone was requesting a mentor and far fewer faculty were indicating they are experts in online or hybrid teaching and learning. Our philosophy – and what we’ve experienced in TOPP To Go! – is that all reflective practitioners have valuable insights to offer. You don’t have to know everything before you can step up and offer something to your fellow colleagues. Just share what you know about one subject or even what’s not working for you. Critical friends can afford a more reciprocal opportunity to grow as professionals.

We’ve developed a brief questionnaire for those who would like to be a part of a critical friend group…or flock (that’s right – it’s a whole bird theme!). No big commitment – we’d just like to help faculty find colleagues with similar interests and goals across campuses (and possibly disciplines). There is such amazing value in connecting with other educators and discussing our practice, and our goal is to help cultivate those opportunities!

Join the FLOC!

Regardless of whether you’d like to participate in the critical friend flocks, we hope you’ll join the UH FLOC community and invite your colleagues to join us as well. We will launch in early Spring semester, but the site will continue to expand and evolve with the needs of our community.

Pupukahi i holomua…Unite to move forward!

Sign up to be added to the UH FLOC site and/or a critical friend flock here!

If you have any questions about UH FLOC or critical friends, please don’t hesitate to contact Youxin Zhang (youxin@hawaii.edu), Nadine Wolff (nwolff@hawaii.edu), and/or Jamie Sickel (jsickel@hawaii.edu).

Virtual Office Hours during Winter Break

Is there a student on email or wandering around campus that needs help applying to Kapi’olani Community College? How about a Liberal Arts or Health Sciences student that needs help registering?

Counselors are having Virtual Walk Ins during the Winter Break, and the First Year Experience office (FYE) is also putting on extended office hours for the first week of the year.

Some offices are using Zoom, and some have rolled out advising appointments via the STAR Balance website.  Please refer new, continuing, and prospective students to the Virtual Office Hours webpage for updates at:

Happy Holidays, and “See” you at Convocation!

SAVE THE DATE! Jan 5: Laulima V. 19 Upgrade & Tips for Instruction (Webinar)

The UH Online Innovation Center (UHOIC) will be facilitating a webinar, Laulima V. 19 Upgrade & Tips for Instruction, on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, from 10 to 11:30 am. The registration link will be sent out soon — watch for an email from the UHOIC.

The ITS Laulima team will be upgrading Laulima from version 12.7 to version 19.5 on December 27th. Laulima’s current announcement states: Upgrade to Version 19.5 (Extended Downtime) 12/27/20. Laulima will be offline starting 3:00am HST on Sunday 12/27/20 until 2:00pm HST. When Laulima resumes operation, we will be upgraded to Sakai version 19.5. Thank you for your patience regarding the downtime.

New in Laulima v. 19:

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) for sign-in — note that this is still being discussed
  • Rubrics tool
  • Gradebook tool (different from Gradebook Classic)

Updated tools in v.19:

  • Tests & Quizzes (streamlined interface — the confusing tabs “Working Copies” and “Published Copies” are gone!)
  • Assignments (added options to send 24-hr reminder emails & grade using a rubric)
  • Overview (page can be rearranged — single or double column, add or delete tools)

A frequently asked question is: Should I wait until after the Laulima Upgrade to import into the Spring semester sites? ITS has reassured us that “The login page and a few tools may look different, but for the most part, things should function similarly,” therefore, we encourage you to go ahead and set up your Spring site(s) whenever you are ready. After the Laulima upgrade, you may want to tweak a few things to take advantage of the new or updated features, but you won’t lose any data.

Stay tuned for more info to come.
