Connect. Engage. Support. Repeat.

Today is July 1, 2020. There are 55 days before the fall semester begins. August 1 is the final deadline to submit online applications, and August 23 is the last day to register online without penalty. Whee!

There are 178 days before Christmas. Whoa, too much information?  The days are whizzing by, and since we have passed the summer solstice, the days will start getting shorter, too.

When better to ask for help? Kapi’olani CC’s Alumni Chapter is assisting the Pāhihi Program for Returning Adults to register for fall classes. There is a gap between the individuals who have been accepted and those who have not yet registered. We are therefore looking for energetic, caring, positive and multi-tasking faculty who would like to volunteer to be part of a phone bank to reach out to these potential students to encourage them to register.

We have a short list of volunteers, but we are putting out a call for more faculty to join in what can be an insightful preview of our future student body. You will be helping to grow our enrollment and providing the early support, the Kūloa‘a, that means so much to this returning adult population. You might be the very person to ignite someone’s life and make it epic.

You will be given a list to work with, you may work from home, and you will be given a script to assist you. Ideally, we would like the calls to be done on July 8-9. More details will be provided when you volunteer. Connect. Engage. Support. Repeat. This pretty much summarizes what you will be doing.

For questions and to sign up for this opportunity to personalize and promote our College in a unique way, please contact Louise at yamamotl@hawaii.edu, or call 734-9513.

Mahalo plenty.

ACCJC Action Letter

Attached is the official notice that the ACCJC Commission finds that Kapi’olani Community College has addressed the compliance requirements, corrected deficiencies, and meets Standards I.B.2, I.B.4, I.B.5 I.B.7, I.B.8, IV.A.7.” The Commission “acted to Reaffirm Accreditation for the remainder of the cycle.” The letter concludes saying, “On behalf of the Commission, we wish to express appreciation for the diligent work and thoughtful reflection that Kapi’olani Community College undertook to respond to these requirements.”

Congratulations to the entire campus for pulling together and moving mountains last year! It truly was a college-wide effort.

The next report for ACCJC will be the Midterm Report due on October 15, 2022. For this report, we will be reporting on our progress on the Quality Focus Essay that we submitted with the 2018 Institutional Self-Evaluation Report (pg. 347), and providing updates on our Follow-Up Report, submitted on March 2, 2020.

While we accomplished a ton, let’s continue our “continuous improvement” efforts as we move forward.

Thank you,
Joanne W.

Kapiolani Zoom accounts are moving to UH ITS this week on Thursday, July 2nd.

GET READY: Kapi‘olani Zoom Accounts Are Moving to UH ITS This Week!

On Thursday, July 2nd (the last day of Summer I term), all Kapi‘olani Zoom accounts will move over to the UH System ITS. Fortunately, the transfer process will be almost seamless for the users and specific instructions will be coming soon! In the meantime, please continue to use the same Zoom meeting link(s) you’ve shared with your students and colleagues.

While the ITS oversight of our Zoom accounts will mean savings in cost and administrative efforts, we will not be able to transfer the existing cloud recordings. If you’ve been saving your recordings in the Zoom cloud, please download and save them to your local disk or to your Google drive. When you are done, please DELETE the files from the cloud.

Recording to the cloud has now been disabled, so you will be prompted to save all recordings to your local disk upon exiting from your meeting. If you need to share your recording with others:

  1. please upload the MP4 file to your Google Drive
  2. change the SHARE setting to “Anyone with the link can view”
  3. copy and share the URL.

Please contact us at celtt@hawaii.edu if you have any questions.

Kapiʻolani CC NMA Students Garner National Recognition

Congratulations Kapiʻolani CC Students Hannah Woodward & Raleigh Harris.

From the University of Hawaiʻi News (https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2020/06/26/student-films-garner-national-recognition/)

Four University of Hawaiʻi media students showcased their works in front of a national audience.

Films by UH Mānoa Academy for Creative Media (ACM) spring 2020 graduates Gavin Arucan and Suky Zhao, and Kapiʻolani Community College New Media Arts (NMA) students Hannah Woodward and Raleigh Harris, were selected for the Class of 2020 Animation Virtual Showcase, hosted by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA)-Hollywood Animation Educator’s Forum.

ACM is very proud of the films created by Gavin and Suky,” said Christine Acham, ACM Mānoa chair. “As seniors, they were an important part of the 2020 animation cohort. The acceptance of their films into this competitive showcase is symbolic of the bright future that lies ahead for these graduates.”

“I’m proud to say that Kapiʻolani‘s New Media Arts program is a part of this international showcase,” said Adam Moura, Kapiʻolani CC’s NMA coordinator and assistant professor. “It shines a light on the dedication and talent of our students.”

TOPP To Go! in Summer II Launches TODAY! 🚀 Join Us Now!

The Teaching Online Prep Program (TOPP) To Go! at Kapi‘olani CC saw 230+ participants enrolled during Summer I. In an effort to support as many faculty and staff as possible in prepping for Fall or beyond, the IDS team has decided to offer another round of TOPP To-Go! from July 6 through August 3, 2020.

TOPP To Go! is a 4-week community-based program where participants will be guided through 4 learning modules. This professional development program will be open to anyone in the UH system who wishes to participate. No commitment necessary – we just hope to serve up some bite-sized instructional support to the masses and provide a space for everyone to come together to communicate and collaborate. A certificate will be awarded to those participants completing all required activities but acquiring a certificate is not mandated.

TOPP To Go! Registration

Participants who join the site will receive announcements as new modules are released (the first module drops July 06). The site is now available to registrants for peeking around and saying “aloha” to others). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate, including experienced DE faculty – please come and share your experience, insights, feedback, questions, and ideas in the forums.

For more information on TOPP To Go!, please contact instructional designers  Jamie Sickel <jsickel@hawaii.edu> or Youxin Zhang <youxin@hawaii.edu>.

We are looking forward to seeing you there! 🙌
