SSC Open Forums & Faculty/Staff Survey

Aloha KCC Ohana,

Faculty Senate Ad-Hoc Student Success Center (SSC) Committee

Our Vision is a learning environment that synergistically fosters community.

Our Mission is to create a learning environment where college students
determine their own success, thrive, and triumph.

In November 2013, the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Student Success Center (SSC) Committee of 28 members was formed to recommend to the Faculty Senate a vision of a new Student Success Center on campus. In the past month, we have gathered information, engaged in numerous meetings and activities, and have made decisions that will inform our report to the Faculty Senate in April. We are not done yet and have a ways to go. But, one of our exciting endeavors was creating a SSC Student Survey to capture the voices and perspectives of our students. Responses were collected from 523 students, representing over 40 different majors and ranging in age from 18-65+ years old. Students rated their academic and personal experiences, identified the most important things that contributed to their success in college, and commented on what encourages and discourages them from seeking supports and services. Additionally, students expressed their design concepts and what would motivate them to utilize the SSC and “hang out” there.

Come, Listen, Talk Story, & Share Your Thoughts & Insights with Us…

We want to continually keep faculty and staff informed of our progress and invite all of you to attend our Faculty & Staff SSC Open Forums (see dates below). Come and share your thoughts and insights and stay abreast of what we are doing as we move forward with this initiative. Your input will help us actualize our vision and mission. If you are not able to attend the forums and would like to share with us individually or as a department, please contact Veronica Ogata (vogata@hawaii.edu). In addition, all of our meeting minutes, will be posted on the campus bulletin by next week.

Faculty & Staff SSC Open Forum Dates:

Friday, February 7, 2:00-2:30 p.m. – Olona 201
Friday, February 21, 2:00-2:30 p.m. – Olona 201
Wednesday, March 5, 4:45-5:15 p.m. – Olona 106
Friday, March 21, 2:00-2:30 p.m. – Olona 201

We also want to hear your voices and perspectives and encourage you to participate in our Faculty & Staff SSC Survey. Please visit the following link: http://tinyurl.com/KapiolaniSSC and complete our on-line survey. There are 5 open-ended questions and should take you only a few minutes to complete. KCC’s Branding Statement

TO: Kapiʻolani CC Ohana
FROM: Leon Richards, Chancellor

For those who were able to attend the Spring 2014 Convocation on January 9, 2014, I would like to thank you for being there and I hope you found the information interesting and applicable.

At Convocation, I asked you to vote between two branding statements:

1. Kūlia i ka nuʻu (Strive for the Highest)
Kapiʻolani Community College – University of Hawaiʻi
Engage, Learn, Achieve
Celebrating 50 Years of Student Success

or

2. Kūlia i ka nuʻu (Strive for the Highest)
Kapiʻolani Community College – University of Hawaiʻi
Engage, Learn, Succeed
Celebrating 50 Years of Student Achievement

The Student Congress met on January 18, 2014 and their votes are also included in the final tallies. The results were close: 98 people chose the first statement and 87 chose the second statement. 14 people responded with other choices: 5 people wanted Kūlia i ka nuʻu to be the branding statement, 3 liked both statements, 5 didn’t like either and a few created new statements.

Since the majority of the people chose the first statement, as of February 1, 2014, the branding statement will be:

Kūlia i ka nuʻu (Strive for the Highest)
Kapiʻolani Community College – University of Hawaiʻi
Engage, Learn, Achieve
Celebrating 50 Years of Student Success

The design of the branding statement will be developed in the coming months.

Thank you to all who voted.
