Congratulations Honor Society! Greener Graduation Initiative a Success!

The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s “Greener Graduation” initiative at Kapi‘olani Community College was a big success!Student at Photo Booth Graduation 2019

Last year, which was the first year we started the initiative, 12 caps and gowns were donated. Ten of those caps and gowns were rented out this year. Caps and gowns were rented for $20 and when the student returned the cap and gown, they got $5 back. Renting saved students about 50% from buying it new at the bookstore.

A group of amazing Kapi‘olani CC students volunteered to help at the Convention Center, which made the donation after the ceremony go so well. The student volunteers were: Nastassja Dinulong, Patrick “Badger” Compton, Jessica Hall, Victoria Hallett, Ako Hamada, Michele Javier, Takumi Yanagisawa, Rebecca Tang, Matt Whisenant, and Krystinna Williamson.  Thank you for giving up some of you free time to make the Commencement Ceremony more sustainable!

Right after the Commencement Ceremony, 45 caps and gowns were donated. Plus, seven of the ten students who rented caps and gowns returned them after the ceremony. The total number of donations and rentals/returns was about 10% of the graduates who participated in the commencement ceremony.Donated Cap & Gown sign

Next year, the Honor Society will have 55 caps and gowns to rent out, which means even more graduation attire will stay out of our landfills!

Students can still donate their caps and gowns. There is a drop-off basket in the Lama Library right across from the circulation desk and one in front of the Honor Society Advisor’s office (Professor Julie Rancilio), which is Kalia 211.

Check out the follow-up story in the UH News: https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2019/05/24/kapiolani-cc-grads-go-green/

Congratulations to Cassandra Robinson, Honor Society Vice President of Leadership, who lead the initiative, and to everyone who participated in the initiative by volunteering, donating, and renting!

Queen Kapi‘olani portrait – Mahalo to our generous donors!

On Monday, May 13, 2019, Kapi‘olani Community College dedicated a new portrait of Queen Julia Kapi‘olani along with two kāhili kū. The commissioned portrait and the kāhili support the College’s strategic directions and Hawai‘i Papa o Ke Ao: advancing the use and understating of Native Hawaiian language, history, and culture.

L to R: Brook Parker, the artist; John Morton , Vice President for Community Colleges; Louise Pagotto, Chancellor; Nāwa‘a Napoleon, Dean of Arts and Sciences; Mele Kahalepuna, expert in feather work

These gifts in honor of the Queen are the result of heartfelt participation by the College’s faculty and staff. Over 60 individuals assisted Mele Kahalepuna and Liane Henderson in the making of the kāhili kū. In addition, the entire commission of the portrait was made possible through a generous matching donation campaign inspired by Chancellor Pagotto’s philanthropy.  Monetary donations were made by 26 individuals, couples, and campus units. Mahalo for your generosity!

Congratulations to the KCC Math Teacher of the Year: Dayna Kitsuwa

The Kapiʻolani Community College Math Teacher of the Year is Dayna Kitsuwa. Congratulations Dayna!

The Kapiʻolani Community College Math Teacher of the Year is Dayna Kitsuwa. Congratulations Dayna!

Dayna won a popular vote by her peers, fellow math faculty, to achieve this award. Everyone who has seen Dayna teach is impressed by her preparation, presentation skills, and the clarity of her explanations. She goes above and beyond standard practices in lecturing, providing notes and other materials for her students, grading, offering help, and assessing her classes.

As the MATH 82 course coordinator she has hired student tutors and lab monitors to benefit both hirees and those they tutor. Along with Mary Ann Esteban and Korey Nishimoto she has written an Open Educational Resource (OER) for MATH 75X to save her students textbook costs. When offered the chance, Dayna opts to teach a wider variety of courses that require more preparation in unselfish acts that benefit her peers and our students.

She also takes on administrative duties above her rank without complaint, like being a leader in the logistical planning between the Study Hub and KCC Math, which has benefited massive numbers of students who visit for math tutoring.

A shining star in the bright sky that is KCC Mathematics, Dayna Kitsuwa demonstrates how much we can achieve when we strive for the highest. Kūlia i ka nuʻu!
