The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s “Greener Graduation” initiative at Kapi‘olani Community College was a big success!
Last year, which was the first year we started the initiative, 12 caps and gowns were donated. Ten of those caps and gowns were rented out this year. Caps and gowns were rented for $20 and when the student returned the cap and gown, they got $5 back. Renting saved students about 50% from buying it new at the bookstore.
A group of amazing Kapi‘olani CC students volunteered to help at the Convention Center, which made the donation after the ceremony go so well. The student volunteers were: Nastassja Dinulong, Patrick “Badger” Compton, Jessica Hall, Victoria Hallett, Ako Hamada, Michele Javier, Takumi Yanagisawa, Rebecca Tang, Matt Whisenant, and Krystinna Williamson. Thank you for giving up some of you free time to make the Commencement Ceremony more sustainable!
Right after the Commencement Ceremony, 45 caps and gowns were donated. Plus, seven of the ten students who rented caps and gowns returned them after the ceremony. The total number of donations and rentals/returns was about 10% of the graduates who participated in the commencement ceremony.
Next year, the Honor Society will have 55 caps and gowns to rent out, which means even more graduation attire will stay out of our landfills!
Students can still donate their caps and gowns. There is a drop-off basket in the Lama Library right across from the circulation desk and one in front of the Honor Society Advisor’s office (Professor Julie Rancilio), which is Kalia 211.
