Student Success Campus Council (SSCC) and What Our Shirts Represent

Aloha KCC Ohana,

On behalf of the Student Success Campus Council, I’d like to share with you our vision, mission, and purpose. The attached document further provides our preamble, core values, and guiding principles. This is the collaboration of many voices – the voices of our students, your voice, and the voices of the current Council and past Committee members. When our journey started over a year ago, it was you, our campus ohana, who guided us along the way. It was our past Faculty Senate who had the foresight to elevate student success. It was our past Student Success Committee that led the vision of moving toward a student success campus. It is our present Council that brings tremendous gifts, strengths, insights, and innovations to advance student success. It is our Chancellor and his administration and their unwavering support that strengthens our progress. We take this time to thank all of you for working together with us in building a student success campus culture that will continually grow and sustain for future generations.

VISION:

Ne’epapa to transform our campus community toward a collective culture that moves in unison to advance student success

MISSION:

No ke kauhale ke kuleana to fulfill our shared responsibility and commitment, as a campus community, to celebrate, support, and promote student success

PURPOSE:

The Council, as a recommending and participatory body, will uphold its vision and carry out its mission deliberately and diligently. Together, with our campus community, we will strive for far-reaching, impactful outcomes in our work to continually:

  • Sustain a culture of student success
  • Recognize student success efforts
  • Increase communication and transparency for student success
  • Close gaps in student success
  • Enhance pedagogical approaches, innovations, strategies, programming, and services for student success
  • Propose policy, practices, procedures, and resources to improve student success
  • Collaborate to achieve student success performance measures
  • Organize and engage in student success professional development opportunities
  • Apply and utilize coordinated data to develop and implement evidence-based action plans

The SSCC shirts align with our vision and mission. Creating and establishing a student success campus takes all of us. We’d like to thank Nawa’a Napoleon and Kapulani Landgraf for their wisdom and guidance in helping us through the process of meaningfully selecting Ne’epapa and No ke kauhale ke kuleana, and creating a design that captures the essence of those words.

We humbly ask you to consider purchasing a shirt. All proceeds will go toward student success events on campus. All sizes of the wick polo shirts and t-shirts are now in stock, including small t-shirts and medium polos. If you would like to place an order, please fill out the attached order form and email it to alandgra@hawaii.edu. News Bulletin email digest issues

Aloha KCC Ohana. It was brought up to our attention over the weekend that stories posted to our News Bulletin were not being delivered in our daily email digest. Sure enough, while the site was performing normally, the feature associated with sending out email copies of our stories appeared to have stopped working as of the 17th.

We immediately set upon trying to find and fix the issue.

Fingers are being crossed right now, but it appears a recent patch might have fixed the issue. You may be receiving Bulletin “News & Events” email again today with stories going back to the 17th as the system attempts to catch up.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. These sites are a sum of many parts and these things may happen from time to time. We appreciate your patience when these issues occur.

Have a Happy Holiday season!

Kapi`olani CC’s Surgical Technology Program is Awarded 10-Year Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) recently voted to award a continuing accreditation to the Surgical Technology Program at Kapi`olani Community College.

The Program, which started in 1998, was first accredited in 2002 and has been accredited ever since. A recent peer review conducted by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) and CAAHEP’s Board of Directors, recognize “the program’s substantial compliance with the nationally established accreditation Standards.”

Patricia O’Hagan, Dean of Health Education at Kapi’olani CC, proudly commends the hard work and dedication of her staff for this achievement. O’Hagan, and primary surgical nurse-educator Tony Choy, stated that all their graduates are placed in positions by any of the healthcare providers in Hawai`i, and these graduates remain in Hawai`i. These students receive a certificate upon graduation, and they are primed to continue on a pathway to become an operating room nurse.

In 2011, the salary of surgical technologists nationally ranged from $29,000 to $60,000. Technicians in Hawai`i average $18.00 – $22.00 an hour, or $41.000 a year. The Surgical Technology Program at Kapi`olani Community College is the only accredited program of its kind in the State of Hawai`i.
