People often try to make lifestyle changes to benefit their health. Unfortunately, these changes are often hard to make and stick to. WELL-BEING 101 workshop (offered by HMSA) will help you evaluate your lifestyle and take small steps that can lead to big improvements in your well-being.

This workshop will be conducted online via webex on Friday, June 12⋅10:00 – 11:00 am. To register and learn more about other workshops, click HERE

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is gone but TOPP To Go! has a first-class seat for you. Join us ASAP. We’re launching TODAY!!!

Considering our campus needs and resources in response to remote instructions, the instructional design support (IDS) team has developed and offered Teaching Online Prep Program (TOPP) To-Go! in Spring 2020. Given the increased need for instructional support, the IDS team decided to reoffer TOPP To-Go! from June 01 through June 29, 2020.

TOPP To Go! is a 4-week community-based program where participants will be guided through 4 learning modules. This professional development program will be open to anyone in the UH system who wishes to participate. No commitment necessary – we just hope to serve up some bite-sized instructional support to the masses and provide a space for everyone to come together to communicate and collaborate. A certificate will be awarded to those participants completing all required activities but acquiring a certificate is not mandated.

Health Education Workshops (by HMSA)

HMSA is offering ONLINE HEALTH EDUCATION WORKSHOPS on various topics. Workshops are Webex classes that teach about nutrition, stress management, and other aspects of health and well-being.

Note: Participation is voluntary and open to all KapCC employees, regardless of health plan affiliation.

ONLINE WORKSHOP TOPICS
  • WELL-BEING 101 People often try to make lifestyle changes to benefit their health. Unfortunately, these changes are often hard to make and stick to. Learn how to use the “stages of change” model for making comfortable, lasting improvements. Taking smaller steps can make it easier to exercise more, eat healthier, and relieve stress.
  • WORKSTATION WELLNESS Work From Home Edition Do you suddenly find yourself working from home full time? While the commute might be more pleasant, spending hours with a makeshift workstation and a disrupted routine might be wearing you down. If certain precautions aren’t taken, it could lead to increased risk for repetitive motion disorders, poor posture, eyestrain, and perhaps most dangerous — a sedentary lifestyle. Learn how to make the best of your new work environment.
  • STRESS BUCKET Coronavirus Edition Each of us has a limited amount of stress we can “hold” before overflow occurs. In recent weeks, the number of stressors coming at us has rapidly increased. Knowing how to manage and “drain” this stress is crucial in preventing high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and other health afflictions. Join us and realize simple (and often enjoyable) ways to lower the volume of stress in your “bucket.”
  • EATING ON THE RUN Takeout Edition You may be aware that fast foods tend to be high in salt, calories, and added sugars. But it is also likely that you are craving some comfort foods during these uncertain times. In this session, we will look to find a balance between eating healthy and eating happy. If we can’t always make the healthiest choices, with the right amount of knowledge and determination maybe we can make choices that are “less unhealthy.”
HOW IT WORKS
  • For date and time for each workshop and to register, please click HERE
    • Registration limit: 50 participants per session
  • Once your registration is confirmed, you will receive a calendar invite with a Webex invitation with instructions on how to join.
  • The workshop is approximately 35 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A.

If you are not able to attend or the registration has reached the limit of 50 participants, please reach out to Darsh at darsh@hawaii.edu to schedule more sessions.

This session will focus on math-related topics but is open to all and engagement techniques to be discussed can be applied to any subject.

Academic Integrity, Tests & Quizzes (Question Banks)
Wednesday, June 24: 9-10 am

Kelli Nakamura is an Assistant Professor who teaches History and Ethnic Studies and has been online for the past 6 years. In her free time (according to her students) she spends all of her waking days and nights thinking about how to thwart student cheating (reality: chasing a three-year-old who laughs at any efforts of structure and discipline). One effective way to ensure that students are taking original examinations is to make a test bank and have Laulima randomly pull questions so each examination is unique. Kelli will be happy to show how this is possible and how she uses this in her courses to promote academic integrity (and save yourself time from making a brand new examination each semester).

We only have what we give

Miki Crutchfield is a counselor with the First Year Experience program at Kapi‘olani Community College. Once asked where she would like to be, Miki’s reply was instant: she likes being here, doing what she is doing to help and guide students toward their professional careers.

True to her word, when Miki learned that several Health Sciences programs were unable to provide necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for students, she unhesitatingly donated several packs of disposable face masks, thereby allowing 5 health programs to resume their practicum requirements. The face masks helped the Medical Assisting, Respiratory Care, and Radiologic Technology Programs. In addition, the donated masks will help students in the Physical Therapist Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs when they resume their on-campus Pro Bono Clinics.

Sheila Kitamura, Department Chair for Health Sciences programs, reflected on Miki Crutchfield’s generosity. The masks will allow students to complete a major component of their respective programs.  The protective masks will keep students safe as they fulfill their requirements for graduation. Sheila said, “Miki’s generosity came at a time of critical shortages, and her donation is very much appreciated, even by clinical sites so that they can preserve their resources for their own frontline staff.”

It was Ben Carson who said, “Happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give.” So Miki Crutchfield has much for what she has given.
