The Life Styles and Developments of Ladakh

HONOLULU – Kapi‘olani Community College’s International Café will host Mr. Skarma Gurmet on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the‘Iliahi Building, Room 106.

The name of Gurmet’s presentation is “The Life Styles and Developments of Ladakh”.
Ladakh is located in the northern most part of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir at 3500 meters above sea level. Known as little Tibet or the Moonland, the people of Ladakh have lived for centuries as an agrarian, self-sustained, and peaceful society with Tibetan Buddhist spirituality. High level Tibetan monks known as Rincpoches teach in Ladakh. Tourists from around the world are drawn to Ladakh to learn about the harmonious ways of living of its people.

Technological development leaves few places untouched in today’s world, including Ladakh.
Modern technology changes ways of lives and in some cases creates a threat to the traditional ways of life, sustainability, as well as fragile environments.

Gurmet, who is an alumni of Kapi‘olani CC and the International Café, will share how he has combined the best of tradition and technology. His presentation covers: a) basic introduction of Ladakh; b) traditional ways of life in the villages and the city; c) religious beliefs and spirituality of the people; d) developments and economy based on tourism and army; and e) the Julay Ladakh non-governmental organization (NGO) established in Tokyo, Japan. For more information about the presentation at Kapi‘olani CC, contact Linda Fujikawa, lindaf@hawaii.edu.

Happy Halloween!

We are now at 99% of our goal.  $10, 915.00 – that’s absolutely fabulous!  Only need $85.00 more.   We know we’ll receive this sometime today or tomorrow or maybe even the next day but we are certain we will receive it.  Hint, hint, hint!  In case you were wondering,  we made a total of $111 at our wristband AUW Fundraiser!  Thank you for your extra donations!

Wishing everyone a safe and fun filled Halloween!  We know we are.  Can’t wait for tonight when our family and friends get together to watch spooky movies.  Of course the best part of this party is the food that we will be sharing.  Again, thank you everyone for their donations to our 2014 Aloha United Way Campaign.

Love & kisses – 2014 AUW Committee

Respiratory Care Practitioner Program, Class of 2014

Kapi`olani CC’s Respiratory Care Practitioner Program proudly announces that as of this month of October, all of its 2014 graduates have obtained their Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials. This means that our students have achieved a 100% pass rate!

The licensing body for Respiratory Care considers a 50% pass rate the norm, and a 90% pass rate would be very exceptional. The fact that Kapi`olani CC’s program has surpassed both the norm and the exceptional level for over 6 years is superlatively exceptional!

Bob Vega, Director for Respiratory Care, commends the dedicated faculty and clinical perceptors who encourage our students to excel. Patricia O’Hagan, Dean of Emergency Medical Services, Health Sciences and Nursing, applauds Kapi`olani CC’s team of experts who demonstrate exceptional skill in their instructional practices.

This achievement reflects stellar student learning outcomes!

Congratulations!

4th Annual Art of Healthy-licious Cooking Contest

Kapi`olani CC is a community’s college. And communities within and around the College have benefitted from the exceptional programs the College provides.

Kahala Nui, a not-for-profit organization for senior living, approached Kapi`olani CC several years ago with a proposal that would benefit both the senior living center and the College. With a focus on healthy aging for seniors, Kahala Nui offered student scholarships in exchange for nutritional, healthy recipes that residents of the center would enjoy.

Chef Warren Uchida, Chef David Brown and nutritionist Grant Itomitzu organized stunning performances by four culinary teams during the 4th Annual Kahala Nui Healthy-licious Competition. The 2014 competition winners are David Rasmussen and Christian Rae Wong who won $700 scholarships.

Darlene E. Canto, Director of Marketing and Community Outreach for Kahala Nui, was impressed by the entire CULN team. She cited the honorable values of commitment, generosity, teamwork, patience and dedication to describe each team member, including the coaches.

Congratulations to our student winners, and for the CULN faculty who take Kapi`olani’s indomitable spirit into all the communities that the College serves. Mahalo nui loa!
