Mahalo for your donations to the “Howls for Towels”

Your Kapiolani Community College Staff Council want to thank the KCC Ohana for their overwhelming generosity to the first-ever “Howls for Towels” campaign. Donations piled up high at the three drop off sites throughout this month-long campaign.

On Thursday May 31, LeeAnn reported that there were 10 boxes of donations in her office!

WIth the campaign pau, organizers of the drive: Chair Alissa Kashiwada, Immediate Past Chair LeeAnn DeMello & Vice Chair Stan Fichtman will be counting up all the individual items that have been donated. According to the initial report back, there have been donations of all kinds to this drive for the Hawaiian Humane Society.

Everything from food to bags to, of course, towels will go toward fulfilling the mission of the Society in featuring programs and services focused on strengthening the human-animal bond: rescuing the abused, engaging volunteers, fighting for better laws and caring for more than 20,000 animals a year.

Your Staff Council will report on our contribution next week at the time members of the Council will head to the Society to drop off the donations.

With thanks to you all, the KCC Ohana, for once again having a generous heart.

Lecture: Picturing the Pāʻū Rider

Date: Thursday, May 31, 2018
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Ohia Cafeteria

KCC’s International Cafe and the Hawaiian Historical Society presents a lecture on Picturing the Pāʻū Rider by Healoha Johnston. Lecture is free and open to the public.

While much has been documented about the paniolo, or the Hawaiian cowboy, few authors have considered the pā‘ū rider—the horsewomen who wore the dramatic skirt for which they are named—and their inclusion in celebrating 19th-century Hawaiian identity. This presentation traces the portrayal of the pā‘ū rider in literary and visual art forms, and makes connections between the pā‘ū riders and expressions of aloha ‘āina, also referred to as Hawaiian nationalism, with a particular focus on photography during King Kalākaua’s governance.

Healoha Johnston is Interim Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of the Arts of Hawai‘i, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Her research interests include: exploring transdisciplinary approaches to contemporary art; and locating connections between historic visual culture and contemporary art, with a focus on the socio-political underpinnings that inform those connections.
