C4ward feature: Mihalanaau (Culture- & Place-based Learning)

Mihalanaau, which means “flowing quietly along, as a current, silent and quiet, knowing that something great has come upon us,” is a C4ward made up of diverse faculty who are passionate about integrating place-based/culture-based content into course curriculum to promote learning that is rooted in Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian values. Check out our past activities and resources on our blog at mihalanaauwork.wordpress.com.

For more information and/or to join, contact concierge Annie Thomas at athomas@hawaii.edu.

C4wards–Collaborative Circles for Creative Change–are groups of faculty and/or staff who share a concern or passion for something they do or want to do and who want to grow through learning from each other, and produce something tangible. Research shows that Professional Development involving collaboration over an extended period of time with a self-directed approach is more effective.

#MM1U: Teaching Water

“Many Minds One University” is a systemwide inquiry project for faculty, students, and community. AY 2017-2018 focuses on the Meaning and Management of Water. This is a dialogue and resource sharing group for faculty teaching water issues in AY 2017-2018.  The group will meet mostly online, with F2F meetings as desired.  MM1U is a program of the UH System Office of Sustainability http://www.hawaii.edu/sustainability/. This is a system-wide group facilitated online, but Kapi’olani faculty interested in problem-solving water issues on campus and in the curriculum are also invited to join a F2F group on campus.

Contact concierge Krista Hiser if interested (hiser@hawaii.edu).

Google Certification

Become a Google Certified Educator this semester! Join this C4ward to be with fellow motivated faculty members striving to reach level 1 and/or level 2 certification.

  • The Certified Educator Level 1 (goal: end of fall 2017) will indicate an ability to successfully implement Google Education apps to enhance teaching and learning.
  • The Certified Educator Level 2 (goal: end of spring 2018) will indicate an ability to successfully integrate a wider range of Google Education tools and other technologies to transform the teaching practice.

Contact concierge Helen Torigoe (htorigoe@hawaii.edu) OR concierge Joyce Tokuda (jtokuda@hawaii.edu) to join and/or to learn more.

Distance Education (DE) Faculty

Let’s talk to each other! Teaching online offers many benefits and energizing challenges, but it can isolate us from our colleagues. Let’s step up our communication so we can support one another, share strategies and materials, and/or advocate for DE policy.

Contact concierge Leigh Dooley (ldooley@hawaii.edu) to join and/or to learn more.

Help us improve the ALFS!

Intrepid colleagues, we are about to embark on year 2 of the 2-year pilot of the Administrative Leadership Feedback System (ALFS).

We need your valuable feedback to make adjustments and improvements!

Please click on the link below to give us feedback on the ALFS. It should take about 5-10 minutes of your time. All staff and faculty–including lecturers, part-time employees, and casual hires–are invited to participate in the survey. If you did not respond to any Administrator Feedback Surveys and/or did not attend the Annual Update Event, your feedback is still welcome and valuable to us.

This survey will close on Friday, 9/1/17.

Thank you from the ALFS Pilot Implementation Team.
