Photo: Honoree David Apostol receives his personalized award bowl by Staff Council Chair, Craig Spurrier.

Congratulations to David Apostol from Auxiliary Services for being voted the Fall 2019 Outstanding Staff Member at Kapi‘olani Community College. David was nominated by his peers for his exceptional services and devotion to our campus community. As one staff member wrote, David provides “outstanding care of our campus maintenance needs and beyond!”

David has always and continues to go above and beyond to beautify our campus and keep it safe for all to enjoy. Another peer remarked, “David is always thinking of ways that he can contribute to the campus outside of the scope of his work. He demonstrates leadership skills by organizing and bringing people together to help with certain tasks. David is generous and really knows and understands the importance of morale among workers. He contributes towards a positive and productive work environment through his actions, generosity, and optimistic attitude.”

David also received the University of Hawai‘i President’s Award for Excellence in Building and Grounds Maintenance in 2016.  The announcement can be read here.

Kapi‘olani CC Staff Council is proud to recognize David Apostol as the Outstanding Staff Member for Fall 2019. Nominations and votes from staff were collected and David was selected based on popular vote. His reward is a beautiful personalized monkey pod bowl. Please join us in congratulating David Apostol.

Campus Compact Western Region Continuums Service Conference

Campus Compact is a national coalition of over 1000 colleges and universities dedicated to the public purposes of higher education. Kapiʻolani Community College was recently awarded $10,000 to host the Campus Compact Western Region Continuums Service Conference on March 17-20, 2021. The award and hosting opportunity recognize the College’s sustained high-quality commitment and national recognition in service learning, and to civic and community engagement.

L-R: Francisco Acoba, Service-Learning Faculty Lead; Denise Pierson, Outreach Coordinator; Louise Pagotto, Chancellor; Atina Pascua, Hawai`i-Pacific Islands Campus Compact Director; Bob Franco, Campus Compact Senior Faculty Fellow

Endorsed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), service learning is a high impact teaching practice that integrates intentional reflection and meaningful service in the community with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. Since 1995, with support from Hawaiʻi Pacific Islands Campus Compact, more than 14,000 students have completed service -learning assignments in over 200 courses with over 100 community partners. In collaboration with the Advising, Civic and Community Engagement in the Social Sciences (ACCESS) Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, signature partnerships have emerged, including the Ohana Learning Center at Palolo Homes and the Malama i Na Ahupuaʻa environmental stewardship program. Recently, the College established a new partnership with the Waikīkī Community Center to provide disaster readiness training for elderly residents.

In 2013, the Service-Learning Program enjoined campus sustainability and climate action initiatives and the program was renamed Service and Sustainability Learning (SSL). SSL, through alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, empowers students, faculty, and community and civic partners, to tackle the social, economic, health and environmental challenges of climate change.

For questions or more information on how you can participate or support the 2021 Continuums Service Conference, contact Bob Franco at rfranco@hawaii.edu.

Diaper Drive

Aloha,

Moms on a Mission Hawaii is a local Sol(c) (3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide the community with awareness of healthier and safer choices. We recently became aware of a critical diaper need in our community where 1 in 3 families are unable to afford diapers for their babies. To assist with this need Moms On a Mission Hawaii has established the Aloha Diaper Bank.

The mission of Aloha Diaper Bank is to raise awareness of diaper need, in Hawaii, and generate donations of dollars and diapers so that all babies remain clean, dry and healthy.

Aloha Diaper Bank will supplement families of low income and in crisis with their critical diaper need. We will establish partners in the community, such as agencies, churches, and organizations that support these families and their babies with critical diaper need. The Aloha Diaper Bank will collect, store, pack and distribute diapers to these families through our established partners.

Working with supportive individuals, businesses and community partners we will be able to help these families make their babies start in life a safe, healthy and happy one.

Please feel free to contact us with further questions. Mahalo,
— Moms on a Mission Hawaii / Momsonamissionhawaii.org

Why a Diaper Drive?
Help support local families with diaper need.

Aloha Diaper Bank is a local diaper bank that helps supplement families of low income and in crisis with critical diaper need for their children so that they are safe, healthy, and happy.
KCC will be collecting the following items in support of the “Aloha Diaper Bank”:
Diaper – all sizes – open packs warmly accepted, also baby wipes

Why are diapers so important?

  • 1 in 3 US families cannot afford to keep their baby clean, dry, and happy.
  • Diapers are not covered through government assistance programs like WIC or Food Stamps.
  • Disposable diapers cost $70-$80 per month per baby
  • Without enough children go too long in soiled diapers.
  • Parents feel more stressed by lack of diapers than lack of food.

The KCC Aloha Diaper Bank Team is happy to announce our 1st annual “2019 KCC Aloha Diaper Bank” diaper drive:

  • When: September, 23 to September 26, 2019 (Monday – Thursday).
(Follow the “Aloha Diaper Bank” on facebook to see upcoming events posted)
  • Where:  Drop off your donations at 1 of 6 locations on KCC Campus:
    • Kalia 101 (Angela Tachino/Jody Akeo)
    • Kauila 121 (Lee Demello)
    • Office of Student Activities aka OSA 1st floor Iliahi Bldg. (Melissa Lum)
