In Memoriam: Uncle Mike Ane

Through his role as the Native Hawaiian Project Coordinator, Uncle Mike Ane came to work at Kapi‘olani Community College in the mid 90’s. The project was funded through an Alu Like consortium grant and was one of the first initiatives that spanned several UHCC campuses designed to specifically address college under-representation among Native Hawaiian students. He mentored many student leaders and was a great counselor to hundreds of students. Uncle Mike was an avid sports fan and during his time here, he fielded volleyball teams that competed with other colleges within our system. He regularly cooked for his students and colleagues and was most famous for his “Uncle Mike’s Shoyu Chicken.” He was a great mentor, counselor, and friend. Thus it is with great sadness to announce that our campus has to say goodbye to Uncle Mike Ane as he passed away earlier this week. Although physically gone, his impact and aloha will remain forever. Any announcements regarding funeral arrangement will follow.
