THINK – “Māui the Demigod, Sweet Potatoes, and DNA: A History through Metaphor”

Please join us for the final THINK session of Spring 2016, when Keala Losch will spin tales of Māui. The myths of Māui’s accomplishments are well known throughout Polynesia. But what if they were not fanciful tales but actual histories? Recent scholarly discoveries in various fields are now starting to lend credence and evidence to the achievements of the Polynesians as described and passed down in the oral tradition via Māui’s “myths.” Keala will recount one of the more famous of the Māui stories, that of fishing land from the sea, and show how science now supports the story as a history told through metaphor rather than a faith-based myth. Light refreshments will be served. Bring a sweet potato dish! We’ll be in the 220 Grille on Friday, April 15, 3:15-5:00 pm.
