It is pono when good things happen to good people.

Patricia O’Hagan, Dean for Health Academic Programs at Kapi`olani CC, proudly announces that Mae Dorado, Assistant Professor of Medical Assisting and Health Sciences, has been named to the HOSA National Board of Directors.

HOSA, (formerly known as Health Occupation Students of America, but now known as HOSA: Future Health Professionals,) is a nationwide, student-led organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education. Visit HOSA’s website at http://www.hosa.org for more information about this unique program of student leadership development.

Mae Dorado is described as a charismatic and dedicated faculty adviser for HOSA. Her recognition to the National Board came after a complex application process that included a competitive election and a 3-minute presentation in front of HOSA, Inc. corporate board members. According to Ada Toyama, State Coordinator for Hawai`i HOSA, “Mae’s speech was outstanding. Her theme was Kulia i ka Nu`u and she linked her theme to her approach to teaching. She made Hawai`i HOSA so proud.”

There are 3 HOSA regions and Hawai`i is part of Region I, representing 19 eligible states.

Congratulations, Mae!

STEM Receives Additional Funding from NSF Tribal Colleges and Universities Grant

Congratulations to Maria Bautista (Department Chair of Math & Sciences) and Herve Collin (Assistant Professor of Physics) for receiving a supplemental award from the National Science Foundation Tribal Universities and Colleges Program grant.  The STEM Program will receive an additional $300,000 to introduce a semester-long Math Emporium Immersion Model Program, which will be a hypothesis-driven approach to improving course completion in calculus.  This project draws upon best practices from the STEM Summer Bridge programs and provides the same immersive experience with peer mentoring to Native Hawaiian and other underrepresented minorities to students during the academic year.

Through additional NSF investment, Kapiolani CC will address the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in college calculus courses across the nation.  The project will serve as a pilot study for system-wide implementation throughout the University of Hawaii Community College campuses.
