Apply by Friday (10/7) to be considered for up to $5,000 in seed grant funds to promote diversity and access activities in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. The next grant cycle will open early in the spring semester.

The University of Hawaii SEED Office is accepting applications for seed grants through its SEED Initiatives for Diversity, Equity, Access, and Success. • Allowable costs: honorarium for speakers or performers, materials and supplies (items costing less than $5,000), travel fees to bring out-of-state speakers to Hawaii, lodging, printing and supply costs, equipment rental, venue rental, administrative support to initiate the project.
  • Not allowable costs: food, UH faculty overload, leis, travel outside of the state for faculty, students or staff, computers, digital cameras, printers.

Funding requests should be well supported by data on the specific number of students who will benefit from the project. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Institutional Effectiveness for data on the number of students the proposed project will support. Institutional reports and other useful information is available at the OFIE website – https://www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/ofie/

Tip #2 – Contact your department chair if you’re interested in applying.

Internal reviews are recommended to be completed by next Tuesday, February 1st, to allow for enough time for the required signatures from your department chair/dean and the fiscal officer.

Tip #3 – Partner with other UHCC campuses to maximize your impact.

IDEAS Award reviewers appreciate proposals that have a maximum impact on students. Consider partnering with colleagues at other campuses if collaborative activities align with your proposed project.

Kapi‘olani receives State Department Grant to promote Hawaii-Okinawa Study Abroad Programs

Congratulations to Dr. Kelli Nakamura for her successful application to the 2022 IDEAS Grant competition. Kapi‘olani is one of 44 colleges and universities nationwide selected to receive funding to expand its study abroad capacity to support U.S. foreign policy goals with funding from the U.S. Department of State Bureau and Educational and Cultural Affairs.

With the IDEAS Grant funds, Kapi‘olani will receive support to design and implement a week-long institute examining historical and contemporary issues related to the overlap of military bases, tourism, and indigenous peoples in Hawaiʻi and Okinawa, Japan through Dr. Nakamura’s Ethnic Studies 101 course.

Kapi‘olani will have an opportunity to expand upon its partnerships built by the Honda International Center staff with institutions in Okinawa to provide study abroad offerings, particularly short-term and virtual programs that meet credit transfer requirements. These programs will focus on common priorities for both partner communities, such as closing skills gaps and spurring economic development in the natural resources and tourism industries and engaging foreign visitors in remediation efforts to promote local sustainability.

Students will receive support to ensure their success in this program, which will allow them to earn credit while exposing them to global issues and study abroad opportunities within the Asia-Pacific region.

Kapi‘olani employees and students will have an opportunity to participate in a survey to express interest in study abroad programs to increase access to these professional development programs. Please stay tuned for a chance to take this survey, designed in partnership with the Office for Institutional Effectiveness and Honda International Center.
