STEM Peer Mentoring Available for Fall 2022!

Please share with your students!

✨Start off Fall 2022 with the support you need to succeed in your STEM classes!✨

All of our peer mentors are available to help you online for Fall 2022. They can assist you with courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, math (103 & higher), and physics.

You also don’t need to come in with a question—feel free to pop into a peer mentor’s session and just say hello. They can talk to you about courses they have taken or opportunities that you might be interested in. You can also ask for help with navigating tech tools or platforms like Laulima or Google Workspace.

Go to kccstem.com/peer-mentoring to find peer mentors’ schedules and to join a session. You don’t need an appointment: drop in any time during their scheduled hours.

How to Access Peer Mentoring:

  • Log in to your UH email account
  • Find the peer mentors’ schedules on our website
  • Select the schedule based on the subject you need help with
  • Click on a mentor’s name and desired time slot and open “more details”
  • The schedule will bring you to Google Calendar event
  • Join a Google Meet session with your mentor

🌺Hōʻawa: Hawaiian Plant Dyeing Workshop – March 30

Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will learn about Native Hawaiian dye-making processes and get a chance to create and stamp your own design. Deepen your understanding of Native Hawaiian plants such as kokiʻo, ʻōlena, and hau and their usages. Connect chemistry and botany with culture and meet other students on campus!

🌊Faculty and Staff Volunteers Needed at Spring 2022 SURF!

Aloha KapCC faculty & staff,

Help us to celebrate our students’ achievements by volunteering at Kapiʻolani Community College’s Virtual Student Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF), happening May 2nd – 4th! 🌊

We need staff and faculty volunteers to help us monitor the presentation rooms and student volunteers on Google Meet. 

You will get a chance to hear KapCC students present their research, while ensuring virtual rooms are safe and helping to communicate any issues with the coordinators. This is a perfect opportunity for you to talk story with students on our campus and create connections to help retain students and build community. Students mentioned in the feedback form that being able to talk to faculty and staff was really helpful and made them feel like our campus cared about them as individuals. 🥰

You don’t need to be a tech genius to support this event—you just need to be willing to learn! We will provide you with a training video and will also offer drop-in help sessions on April 14th, 15th, & 19th to address any questions or concerns. 🌊 Student volunteers needed at Fall 2021 SURF!

Do you have students needing volunteer opportunities? Please forward this call!

📣  Need service hours for a scholarship, or want to boost your resume? Get valuable experience as a volunteer for Kapiʻolani Community College’s Student Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF), happening Dec 7 – 9 on Google Meet. Sign up to volunteer by Friday, November 12.

End this semester on a positive note by supporting your classmates and friends at our bi-annual research fair! This event is a great way to learn more about all the different research opportunities available at any level at KapCC. Volunteers will help us facilitate each virtual “booth” by making sure that both the student presenters and the attendees feel comfortable with the technology, helping to connect everyone to the proper resource, and creating a comfortable environment to make this event accessible for all of our students.

Volunteers will be sent instructions and are expected to attend an hour-long training session. Training sessions are scheduled for Monday, November 22nd, at either 2:00 – 3:00 pm or 4:00 – 5:00 pm—attend the session that best fits your schedule. Drop-in help sessions will also be provided on November 18th, 23rd, & 24th. Add the Undergraduate Research Experiences Google Calendar for drop-in session links.

Learn how they are involved in protecting our access to safe, quality water, which supports the ‘āina and native ecosystems here in Hawaiʻi. Find out how they overcame challenges on their journey and created a strong foundation that keeps them inspired and motivated to pursue their kuleana in their careers.

  • 🔬 Did you know that you can use your science degree to directly impact Hawaiʻi’s future generation? Learn how Māhealani Bambico at NOAA connects keiki to the ʻāina by improving Hawaiʻi’s K-12 science curriculum.
  • 🏗️  Ever wonder what it takes to safely and ethically build the structures that we live, work, and play in? Dr. Melia Talagi from Yogi Kwong Engineers LLC will share how geotechnical engineers help to ensure that civilization and the environment can coexist.
  • 💧 Frustrated with pollution and other environmental issues and want to find out how they are being addressed? Dr. Aurora K. Kagawa-Viviani uses her scientific research to protect water through better ethical policies in Hawaiʻi on DLNR‘s Commission on Water Resource Management.
  • 🌧️  Runoff after storms can make Oʻahu’s ocean brown and hazardous, closing beaches and making it unsafe to surf or swim. D. Mahina Weatherholtz is working hard at the City and County of Honolulu Storm Water Quality Division to make sure that our storm water systems are protecting our marine ecosystems from biohazardous waste.
  • 🏭  Did you know that more than half a million pounds of toxic chemicals were dumped into Oʻahu’s ocean in 2019? Hoʻāno Rosario from Enpro Environmental investigates sources of pollution and hazardous materials that affect our health and the environment and recommends solutions to eliminate these risks.
