Day 3 of the Earth Week Challenge: Water Bottle Wednesday

Open Classroom Presentation on Bottled Water
KCC student, Jason Salseg, will share with the SSCI 261 Food & Society class his research on the logistics and infrastructure of Hawaii’s ability to handle the production of bottled water and the PET bottle byproducts. You are welcome to join the presentation in Olona 202 from 1:45-2:15PM.

From April 20 to 24 join us in a week-long celebration of our precious Earth.
The Service & Sustainability Learning Program’s student Sustainability Promotion Team, along with the Faculty Senate Ad-hoc Sustainability Committee, invite you to participate in a number of events throughout the week, beginning with our campus Earth Day event on Monday, April 20 from 10AM to 4PM. (See the Event’s page for a more detailed description of the Earth Day program.)
Highlights of the week include:
– A CFL lightbulb exchange by Hawaii Energy — bring in your incandescent lightbulbs and receive a free CFL one which you can use to increase energy efficiency in your home.
– Screening of Cowspiracy in the Library sponsored by the Liscious Dishes and the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii (Monday, 12noon)
– Soul Motion for your inner peace on Friday from 11AM to 12noon in the KCC Chapel, led by Counselor Mimi Yen.

The Bloodmobile will be on campus next Monday, April 6, for an emergency blood drive. From 10AM to 1PM, behind the Ohia Building.
At this moment, our state is in critical need of blood which is O+ (giving blood is a great way for you to find out your blood type!). O+ is the universal blood for all positive blood types and can be received by patients who have type A+, B+, AB+ and O+ blood.
On-campus blood drives are a convenient way for you to donate and help support all those who are in need of blood transfusions, be it a cancer patient, an accident victim, a person undergoing surgery, and others. Help save lives! Donate blood.

The Kapi’olani Service & Sustainability Learning Program presents a new leadership initiative for students, and even faculty/staff, based on the national EcoReps student leadership framework. This semester we will focus on climate change. We’ll launch the initiative with a retreat called, “Building a Community of Change Agents: Learning About and Responding to Climate Change” which will be on February 21 at Hawaii Nature Center.
All KCC students are welcome to apply for participation in this opportunity, for which we are asking about a 25-hour commitment including the Feb. 21 retreat. See the EcoReps Flier for more information.

This is a community workday to promote friendship, peace, and sustainability. We’ll tend the garden beds, harvest crops, and maintain the orchard.
Bring fresh produce for donation to Aloha Harvest, or to add to our stew lunch. Also, supply your own bowl and spoon and water bottle to reduce waste.

As a part of Campus Sustainability Day on October 22, a pop-up Trash-to-Fashion Costume Shop will be open for campus members to create a new or update an old Halloween Costume.
Give new life to an old blanket, bottle caps, mom’s ready-for-the-trash shower cap, cheap glasses you’ll never wear again, cardboard boxes, or last year’s ugly Christmas sweater and matching cap. Exercise your creativity and help reduce our annual Halloween ecological footprint.
Donations are being accepted in the Kapi’olani Service & Sustainability Learning Program office in Iliahi 118 or in the Kahikoluamea Center in ‘Iliahi 231 (near the front desk). On October 22, we’ll have a fashion show to give you a taste of the possibilities. Come dressed in your trash-to-fashion costume on October 30 and strut your stuff!
The Costume Shop will be open in the afternoons from October 22 to October 30 in the ‘Imiloa Studio (‘Iliahi 231-all the way in the back!)
