Wo opportunities for all faculty AND staff!

The Wo Learning Champions Generation XIV are happy to announce the opportunity to apply for two awards for University of Hawai’i Community Colleges courses, programs, services, units, or institutions that have helped build community or promote innovation and positive change.

The past couple of years have offered great challenges.  Despite the challenges (or because of them!), our UHCC colleagues have continued to innovate and meet the needs of our college communities.  This year, the awards feel especially important as we strive to honor each other’s dedication and admirable progress.

The Wo Learning Champions Generation XIV invite all colleagues to consider these applications.
(Note: To apply, create a new copy of the application document that you can type into.  Submission instructions are included in the application.)

Each award includes a grant for up to $500 toward future professional development or project support.

Applications are due by Monday, January 31, 2022.
Late applications will not be considered.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Kimberly Koide Iwao at koidek@hawaii.edu or Jeri Enokawa at jilorenz@hawaii.edu.

KCC Faculty Senate 2017-2018 Evaluation Survey Results

An anonymous six-question Google Forms survey was conducted between August 31 and September 10, 2018. The survey was distributed via kapiolani-faculty@lists.hawaii.edu to the faculty electorate, which consisted of 427 full and part time faculty. There were 60 responses. The summary is available at https://goo.gl/1nSnWi

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback which will help your Faculty Senate continue to evolve in order to serve the needs of the faculty and the college.

LMS project is on hold

The UH system process to review, send out RFPs, and pilot potential learning management system alternatives to Laulima is on indefinite hold due to budgetary concerns. I wish I had better news, and I appreciate the faculty participation last spring in reviewing the top candidates for potential inclusion in the RFP. I will stay in contact with the LMS Review Committee head, Hae Okimoto, and if circumstances change, I will send out an announcement. — Susan Jaworowski

New LMS selection process postponed for a year

The RFP process is taking longer than the LMS committee had planned, and has not yet gone out. As we missed this window of opportunity, the timeline has been pushed back a year – RFP design, posting, and selection to take place this academic year (2017-2018), with piloting to start in fall 2018, selection in spring 2019, and implementation to start in fall 2019, with full conversion by the end of that academic year. I’m personally sorry for the delay, and will continue to serve on the committee and keep the campus informed of the status of the process.

LMS selection July 2017 update

Thereʻs been no decision on whether UH will be adopting a new LMS, and which one it would be, as the LMS committee is still in the information gathering stages. Thus, weʻll still be using Laulima during the Summer and Fall 2017 semesters. The spring survey was an important step to help the committee collect feedback on what is important to users. With that info the UH System is crafting a thorough Request for Proposal over the summer that will be open to all vendors to submit their proposals.

Once the proposals are received the committee will then review them to see if there are acceptable candidates. From the acceptable candidates a decision will then be made as to which vendors/systems will be used for pilot programs (likely during the Spring 2018 semester. Everyone else will still have Laulima). After the pilot programs are done, the final decision as to whether a new LMS would be adopted would be made and full implementation would then be completed for everyoneʻs use beginning Spring 2019.

LMS replacement review process – update for May 2017

Thanks to those who participated in the watching the LMS vendor presentations and submitting your thoughts in the survey. The survey was an important step to help the LMS committee collect feedback on what is important to users. With that info, the UH System is now crafting a thorough Request for Proposal (RFP) that will be open to all vendors to submit their proposals. Once the RFPs are received, probably in June, the committee will then review them. From the acceptable candidates a decision will then be made as to which vendors/systems will be used for pilot programs  (the number of vendors who will be piloted is uncertain until we get the RFP responses).  Pilots will be selected over the summer to use the pilot LMS(es) in the fall.

Therefore, except for the pilots, the campus will still be using Laulima during the next fall and spring. After the fall 2017 pilot programs are pau, the final decision as to whether a new LMS would be adopted, and which one, would be made in spring 2018, and rollout is planned for summer 2018 wirh full implementation for everyoneʻs use beginning Fall 2018 (time frames are per the current LMS Review process timeline, which is at https://sites.google.com/a/hawaii.edu/lms/timeline).

I will remain involved on the LMS committee over the summer and will post updates as we have them.

Only 32 people at KapCC have responded to the LMS survey

As of Thursday morning, only 32 KapCC faculty and staff members have participated in the LMS replacement survey.  That is fine if you trust the 32 of your KapCC colleagues who have responded to make this important decision for you, as well as the 257 respondents from other campuses. If, however, you want to have your voice heard when the decision is made, please make sure you complete your survey, which was sent out to you last week from kchan@hawaii.edu.

Here is one last link to the videos, and another link to the materials submitted by the applicants, to help inform your decision:

No survey completion, no grumble!

Still on the fence about which LMS replacement? See the vendor responses!

Each vendor submitted responses to specific questions submitted by the LMS committee. If you are strapped for time and haven’t watched the videos, you can look at their responses and check for key words important to you, such as “ePortfolio” or “analytics.” The link is here:

The survey, which was sent to you last week, closes Friday, 3/24.

LMS survey is for real! Respond by 3/24.

The LMS replacement  survey was sent out on March 16 from kchan@hawaii.edu.  Some faculty have expressed a concern that this might be a phishing scam. It is not; it is the long awaited LMS  survey, which reads “The University of Hawai’i System has been using Laulima (based on the open source software SAKAI) for almost 10 years as our learning management and collaboration system. Please complete this survey to share your teaching and collaboration needs for our system of the future. Vendor presentations are available at <http://vod.its.hawaii.edu/its_lms/>. You may return to this survey at any time prior to the deadline of 3/24/2017 with your unique code: xxxxxxx.”

Thanks to Helen Torigoe who pointed out the potential for faculty to view this email as a phishing attempt.   Please respond by 3/24.  The LMS committee will be meeting over spring break to review the results.

The UH system Learning Management System review committee will be sending out a survey next week for your input on the features you would want to use in a new LMS.
