AUW’s Community Care Fund – Please donate…

Aloha Kapi’olani CC Ohana,

The Paul S. Honda International Center would like to thank you for your continued support of our campus AUW campaign. This is the last “official” week of the 2022 Oahu AUW Campaign but donations will still be accepted even after the October 7th deadline on the Ignite platform. For payroll deductions, the deadline is November 11, 2022, so there is still time to donate!

The last topic I will be sharing with you is AUW’s Community Care Fund.

Unlike Safety Net, the Community Care Fund allows AUW to quickly allocate resources when the unexpected strikes. Heavy rainfall, property loss, disaster that strikes suddenly is what the Community Care Fund was made for. This fund is flexible and allows AUW to tap into our extensive network and identify the agencies best suited to respond given the specific needs. The Community Care Fund is also available at any time, so there are no deadlines or time lines. When the need strikes, Aloha United Way can spring into action and get funds to the best organizations and do it quickly.

Due this Friday (10/7): Diversity grants for up to $5,000 for Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 programs

Apply by Friday (10/7) to be considered for up to $5,000 in seed grant funds to promote diversity and access activities in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. The next grant cycle will open early in the spring semester.

The University of Hawaii SEED Office is accepting applications for seed grants through its SEED Initiatives for Diversity, Equity, Access, and Success. (IDEAS) program.  Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to apply for an IDEAS award to fund program activities promoting diversity awareness. Individual projects. The grant funds (up to $5,000) may be used as follows:

  • Allowable costs: honorarium for speakers or performers, materials and supplies (items costing less than $5,000), travel fees to bring out-of-state speakers to Hawaii, lodging, printing and supply costs, equipment rental, venue rental, administrative support to initiate the project.
  • Not allowable costs: food, UH faculty overload, leis, travel outside of the state for faculty, students or staff, computers, digital cameras, printers.

Tip #1 – Include the # of Kapi‘olani students that will benefit from the project. These grant funds are provided through student fees and should therefore benefit students directly (i.e., the target audience should not be only community members)

Funding requests should be well supported by data on the specific number of students who will benefit from the project. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Institutional Effectiveness for data on the number of students the proposed project will support. Institutional reports and other useful information is available at the OFIE website – https://www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/ofie/

Tip #2 – Contact your department chair if you’re interested in applying.

Internal reviews are recommended to be completed by next Tuesday, February 1st, to allow for enough time for the required signatures from your department chair/dean and the fiscal officer.

Tip #3 – Partner with other UHCC campuses to maximize your impact.

IDEAS Award reviewers appreciate proposals that have a maximum impact on students. Consider partnering with colleagues at other campuses if collaborative activities align with your proposed project.

Interested in applying? Be sure to complete both the PDF application form and the Google Form linked below.

Key dates:

  • Friday, September 30th — recommended internal deadline for complete applications
  • Week of October 3rd – request signatures from your department chair and fiscal office
  • Friday, October 7th – application deadline

Please contact the grants office at kccgo@hawaii.edu with questions pertaining to this grant program.

Kapi‘olani Community College students are encouraged to file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for federal scholarships, such as the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Queer Competency: A Foundation in Identity and Allyship (October 3, 2022, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Queer Competency: A Foundation in Identity and Allyship (October 3, 2022, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

This training’s purpose is to both invite and challenge audiences to better understand the diverse and complex experiences of the queer community. The first portion of this training provides education on identities, gender theory, and queer competency for folks dedicated to the life long commitment of allyship. The last part focuses on experiences of sexual assault and domestic violence within the queer community, barriers for receiving services, and how allies can support queer survivors. This training also focuses on transgender competency and is open to all folks who want a better understanding on how to support the trans community.

This session is a presentation and Q&A offered to all UH faculty, staff, and students.  Register here.
