The fall deadline is approaching for the study abroad scholarships through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Please be sure to submit your application by Thursday, October 6, 2022 to be considered. The next cycle of applications will open early in the spring semester.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program is seeking applications for students interested in studying abroad or participating in overseas internships. The fall cycle will fund study abroad activities during Winter or January 2023, Spring 2023, Summer 2023. The fall deadline is Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
Applicants will compete nationwide for a limited number of scholarships for up to $5,000 (or $8,000 for critical languages). Applicants may qualify for an additional $2,000 through CIEE just for applying to the Gilman scholarship program.
Kapi‘olani students have an advantage over other applicants because they are applying from a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and there are a low number of Gilman recipients from Hawaii.
The eligibility criteria include:
- Candidates must be U.S. citizens
- Candidates must be undergraduate students in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
- Candidates must be the recipient of the Federal Pell Grant during the application period or while abroad
- Candidates must be in the process of applying to or accepted for a study abroad or internship program for academic credits.
- The program must be at least two weeks long (for applicants from two-year institutions) or three weeks long (for applications from four-year institutions), and programs must be in a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 country
Kapi‘olani Community College students are encouraged to file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for federal scholarships, such as the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Students may also apply for Chancellor Louise Pagotto’s scholarship, Queen Kapi‘olani International Travel Scholars Endowed Fund, through the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation.
Applicants are encouraged to do the following:

- Choose a study abroad and/or internship program (in-person or virtual)
- Apply for the Gilman scholarship for up to $5,000 (or $8,000 for critical languages)
- Apply for an additional $2,000 from CIEE

The Gilman program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain global experience as citizen diplomats while working toward their academic goals. Interested applicants are encouraged to start their application early and reach out to the campus advisors for guidance on developing a competitive application.
