Laulima replacement demos coming in February!

The UH System is reviewing current LMS platforms to select the one that best supports the teaching and learning needs of our institution. The LMS review committee has contacted six major LMS vendors – Blackboard, Canvas, Desire2Learn, Moodlerooms, Sakai, and Schoology – to provide demos of their platforms next month.

So far there are three scheduled: Blackboard, Canvas, and Schoology.

2/13 and 2/14 at 2  – 3:30 pm – Blackboard (live)
2/15 at 2 – 3 pm – Schoology – webinar
2/21 and 2/22 at 2 – 3:30 pm – Canvas (live)
pending: Desire2Learn (D2L), MoodleRooms & Sakai (“parent” of Laulima).

The live presentations will be done at UHM, and will be broadcast to the other campuses via HITS. The two live demos are duplicated on succeeding days to offer more opportunities for faculty to view them. There will be the opportunity for some questions from the audience, but given the size of the audience, probably not every question can be accommodated. The LMS committee will follow up with a faculty survey in early March on their preferences.

Your campus rep is Susan Jaworowski, who will update the schedule if/when additional vendors are added. Please keep an eye on the bulletin for updates. You can follow the schedule as it updates on the LMS site at https://sites.google.com/a/hawaii.edu/lms/minutes. The timeline for the process can be found at https://sites.google.com/a/hawaii.edu/lms/timeline

Kapi’o News Feature On Running Start Student

Gum Aung is a 17-year-old high school senior at Kaimukī High School and is taking college courses at Kapi‘olani Community College through the Running Start Program at Kaimukī High. He is active in the school’s band and plans on pursuing a career in computer science.

But what sets him apart from most kids his age is the nearly decade-long journey he and his family had to take to get here. As of December 2016, Aung and his family have been able to call themselves U.S. citizens after living in this country for the past six years. In a recent interview with Aung, he relayed the story of he and his family’s trying passage into the U.S from his war-torn country, Myanmar (also known as Burma), and the constant moving in between.

“I want to inspire other people to follow their dreams, even if it can be difficult and sometimes seems impossible,” Aung said.

ORS Grants & Contracts Certification Program – registration through February 21, 2017

The UH Office of Research Services is providing its Grants and Contracts Certification Program for fiscal and administrative support staff who will be working with extramural awards.

This certification provides a survey of applicable policies/rules/regulations, along with a brief introduction to some technical skills that are involved with post-award management. The breadth of this training will provide a general understanding of what extramural award management may entail.

The in class sessions are held at Manoa Kuykendall 201 and will be “broadcast” to the other campuses. Kapi‘olani CC previously hosted the ORS training via its HITS site in Naio for participants who prefer not to drive to Manoa campus. These arrangements can be made if there’s interest among any potential attendees.

The program is comprised of six modules: four in-class, and two online through Laulima. The registration deadline for the Spring 2017 ORS Contracts & Grants Certification Program is February 21, 2017.  The seats are limited, please register online ASAP at:

http://www.ors.hawaii.edu/index.php/cgcp-spring-2017.
