Kudos to ACCJC Writers and Readers from Kapi‘olani CC

The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), our institutional accrediting commission, recently invited volunteers to apply to serve as writers and readers for a major revision of the accreditation standards. A total of 14 individuals from Kapi‘olani CC answered the call—more applicants than from any other institution in California, Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific. Of the 14, six individuals were chosen. For the team of writers: Veronica Ogata, Lisa Radak, and Jamie Sickel. For the team of readers: Shannon Sakaue, Tony Silva, and Joanne Whitaker. I am proud of the 14 individuals who took the step to be considered for this important work and proud to know that Kapi‘olani will play a significant role in shaping the standards of excellence for institutions in the Western region for years to come. Congratulations to all!

Posted by the Psychology Club at KCC, on behalf of Samuel Spencer, Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology at UHM

The Psy Club at KCC is happy to help spread the news about another exciting and FREE opportunity for you to connect with the field of Psychology.  Sam Spencer, Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, is hosting a workshop for those interested in pursuing degrees in Clinical Psychology!  See below for more details!

Aloha undergraduate and post-baccalaureate psychology students,

We hope this email finds you well. Please see the attached flyer and brief description below about an exciting upcoming opportunity that UHM Clinical Studies Program Doctoral Candidate Sam Spencer is putting together. Specifically, on Wednesday 5/12 from 4-5 PM, a virtual panel will be held entitled Graduate Training in Applied Mental Health Practice and Clinical Fields. Geared toward assisting students interested in pursuing graduate training and eventual careers in clinical psychology, mental health counseling, and related fields, the following panelists from diverse backgrounds will share their experiences and answer questions from the audience:

  • Sharlene Curry, BS, UHM MS student in special education, graduating in May 2021, matriculating into the behavior analysis PhD program at Utah State University in Fall 2021
  • Brandt Kam, BS, UHM MSW student graduating in May 2021, starting full time dual diagnosis counseling job in June 2021
  • Lisa Morikawa, MS, recent graduate of UH Hilo mental health counseling master’s program, currently working toward LPCC licensure
  • Kyla Stueber, PsyD, Post-doctoral Fellow, I Ola Lahui Rural Behavioral Health Services
  • Emilee Turner, MA, Doctoral Candidate, UHM Clinical Studies Program

While we encourage all attendees to bring their own questions to the panel, the following four questions may provide some inspiration for discussion:

  1. What has helped you grow/learn in your clinical training experiences?
  2. Describe your training experiences related to clinical assessment and individual therapy, and what aspects of your training have been most helpful. What pre-existing skills/undergrad experiences helped prepare you for your graduate clinical training?
  3. What are the qualities/assets (“therapist factors”) that you feel have best facilitated your clinical training/work with clients?
  4. What advice would you give undergraduate students in their preparation for application to applied mental health counseling-related graduate programs?

Please see the attached flyer for more details.

You’re Invited to Contribute to the Next Distance Education Plan!

It’s time to write a new DE Plan!

We do DE pretty well at Kapi‘olani CC, and that’s probably due, at least in part, to the guidance and focus of our current DE Plan. But DE is now more important than ever to our campus, and it’s therefore more important than ever to share your thoughts and experiences as we envision how DE might look at Kapi‘olani over the next 5 years. The more staff, faculty, and students that contribute, the better!

But during these stressful COVID times, many of us feel like we’re already working at capacity, and some of us are on the verge of burnout. With that in mind, we’re working hard to structure opportunities to contribute meaningfully, to honor everyone’s voice and vision, without over-taxing anyone’s time and energy.

Might you be interested in contributing? Please contact the DE Coordinator (Leigh Dooley) at ldooley@hawaii.edu. I’m happy to answer your questions as you decide. Or, come to one of these virtual synchronous DE Plan Info. Sessions (just one will do–the same session will be offered multiple times to accommodate folks’ schedules):

Fri 4/30: Virtually Tour 2 Classes at Lunch and DEssert

This Friday, 4/30/21, at 12:00 – 1:00 pm, join us for our last Lunch and DEssert session of the semester. At the session, you’ll experience a virtual tour of two online classes with two Kapi‘olani CC teachers: Nadine Wolff will guide us through one of her online math classes, and Kloe Kang will guide us through one of her online studio art classes.

Just join via the link below, and feel free to munch on your lunch while you peek into the classes (and teacher minds!) of your colleagues. These Zoom sessions are intended to be informal, and there will be time for conversation and Q&A.

Join us at the table while we indulge in some nourishing sweetness.

Two desserts, many forks! At lunchtime (12:00 – 1:00 pm) every Friday this semester, please join your Kapi‘olani CC colleagues for a fun lunch-hour chat and tour of online classes. Each Friday, two teachers will give us a tour of one of their classes and share with us their sweetest ideas. These informal Zoom sessions will include time for Q&A and conversation. Watch the Bulletin for more information about specific tour guides and disciplines, but save these dates!
