Lei Hulu Kāmoe Workshop with Mele Kahalepuna Chun, Tuesday, Jan 7th – 10:00-11:30am or 12:30 – 2:00pm. DEADLINE TO REGISTER: Dec 23rd, 12 noon

Mele Kahalepuna Chun, a third-generation featherwork artist, started learning featherwork at the age of five from her Tutu, “Aunty” Mary Louise Kaleonahenahe Wentworth Peck Kekuewa, a renowned feather lei master. Her late grandparents, Paul and Mary Lou Kekuewa, were considered the foremost proponents of the art. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai‘i named Mary Lou a Living Treasure in 2003; two years later, Paulette (Meleʻs mom) and Mary Lou received the ʻŌ‘ō Award from the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce. The Historic Hawai‘i Foundation bestowed all three with Preservation Awards for their efforts in perpetuating the Hawaiian feather arts—Paulette Kahalepuna in 1999 and her parents in 2000. Mele carries on her family legacy, runs the family shop Nā Lima Mili Hulu No‘eau with great pride and knows that her Tutu and Mom are with her every step of the way.

Title III will be paying for the workshop. Participants will need to purchase supplies from Mele at Nā Lima Mili Hulu No‘eau, 762 Kapahulu Avenue, (808) 732-0865. Before the workshop, you will need to cut the feathers. Please purchase the following before the workshop (let Mele know you are making a lei kāmoe at the Kapiolani CC workshop): 2 ounces of feathers = $25, measure = $4, and clippers = $4. At the workshop, you will need to purchase: yarn/ribbon = $1.75 and Thread – $3.50. Total supplies estimate: $38.25 (w/o tax). There are a limited number of seats for each time.
